I am not really sure what to write about this, as I am pretty shocked.

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/w...rides-new-jersey-chris-christie-a7830266.html

"At least 207,468 minors married in the US between 2000 and 2015, according to data compiled by Unchained At Last"

"The youngest wedded were three 10-year-old girls in Tennessee who married men aged 24, 25 and 31 in 2001. The youngest groom was an 11-year-old who married a 27-year-old woman in the same state in 2006."

"In May, the high-profile Republican governor for New Jersey declined to sign into law a measure that would have made his state the first to ban child marriage without exception. Chris Christie claimed it would conflict with religious customs."

I know what I can write about it - SICK! What is wrong with these sick, sick people

They must have run out of brothers and sisters to marry.

Not just USA that has odd laws. In France the age of consent is 15 but below that age it is not statutory rape unless it can be proved that consent was not give — ie at any lower age! See recent cases:

Well, there you have it..as i've always said..the usa cannot preach to other countries about anything...

Very unpleasant indeed to my way of thinking, but are we doing what we always accuse the US of, poking our nose into other countries affairs.

Always readily condemn them for slavery, think we had a rather large interest in that too

most of the middle east allows this basically from onset of pubity?
USA is not a partially decent country in my standing so this makes sense to add that to there woes.

Until 2013, Vatican City's age of consent was 12. Now it's 14 if the girl is married (presumably only with her husband?)

There was a bit of a social media campaign a couple of years ago when a woman produced a charity video about her experiences of being forced to marry the man who raped her when she was around 11 years old. I find it so hard to understand how a supposedly progressive society can still allow these things to happen, check out girlsnotbrides.org for more info

In most cases it takes its laws from Italy since it's like a miniscule suburb of Rome. The age of consent in Italy is 14 but you have to be 18 to marry.

The ages of consent vary by jurisdiction across Europe. The ages of consent are currently set between 14 and 18. The vast majority of countries set their ages in the range of 14 to 16; only five countries, Cyprus (17), Ireland (17), Malta (18), Turkey (18) and Vatican City (18)

From here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_consent_in_Europe

Spain changed its age of consent from 13 to 16 in 2013.

Historically there have been plenty of marriages in Britain considerably younger than is presently considered acceptable (actual marriages, rather than betrothals). For example Isabella of Angouleme https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isabella_of_Angoulême although she didn't have her first child until she was 19.

But wasn’t the full story with this being that the Vatican city had no child residents, so they saw no need to update from legislation adopted from Italy in around 1889 or did I imagine that...

Not that I am defending child marriage or sexual activity.

Do you really think that compares to modern day accepted norms?

I presume you mean British norms compared to Brish historical norms (not intended to be snarky BTW)? No, not at all - I was posting to present an alternative POV from the history of this country to show that we were like other European countries until relatively recently (1885).

Evil stuff, just like sexualising all children in the kindergardens and primary schools thanks to "progressive" agenda. Abortions, rapes, murders, drug trafficking. There is so much s*** in the world.

Its now 18 i believe.

Story today about France bringing in the age of 15 (were considering 13). I do find it strange that there is such a variation - Germany & Austria are 14 for example, but Ireland is 17. You would have thought that similar countries would have the same age.

This isn’t about a ‘progressive’ agenda or ‘liberals’. If you look at the statistics this is about places with a backward religious influence on morals. Including the good old US of A.

This isn’t a problem in most of Western Europe where we have morals and laws built on science and fact instead of superstition and fairy tales.

Frankly your stance on this couldn’t be less factually correct.

https://www.ageofconsent.net/world/vatican-city agrees with both of us - 18 if unmarried, 14 (girl) and 16 (boy) if with the spouse.

Why do you find this strange?

You can marry at 16 in England and Wales, with parents/guardians consent, but this isn't required in Scotland despite both countries being part of GB. Northern Ireland is part of the UK, but their firearms laws are much less restrictive. Handguns are permitted, and personal protection can be sufficient justification to obtain a firearm certificate if you meet the criteria. Jersey is a Crown Dependency and most of the population are British subjects or citizens, but their tax regime is far less rapacious than the UK.

England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are all parts of the UK/GB, and Jersey is closely linked to the UK, but they have significant differences in their laws. The EU seem to have left the 'age of consent' issue alone, for now anyway.

That certainly explains why that table was full of the progressive liberal countries of sub-Saharan Africa.

I'm concerned that you think nurseries are sexualising children. No idea where you got that notion.

Makes you worry about the type of nurseries he frequents!!
