Hello all...

I love photography, and am only just learning to use my DSLR, and then post some images on here for critique, however, in the meantime, I work for the tourism board for Chester & Cheshire.

For our 2010 visitor guide, I'd love to use some images loaned to us from enthusiasts/semi-professionals, and wonder if anyone fancies getting involved? What we'd like to try and do is, if we feature photographs, we'd also like a short piece of copy about what that image means to its creator, or what they particularly like about the featured attraction/view, etc...

Perhaps also, contributors could be featured on our Flickr account, which also brings you greater attention.

Any thoughts anyone?

Kevin

We have a fair few members from Chester and Cheshire, myself included.
It's an interesting proposition, I trust the owner of any image used will have full credit ?

So to translate you are looking for free images for your brochure?

Hello both - thanks for your replies, and to Ian, who messaged me privately.

Yes, I imagine it does seem like we're saying "give us your fantastic images for free" and yes, I guess we are to some degree. However, in this digital age, it's also fantastic to be able to invite people to contribute. Currently, I occasionally use some of my own images, and I'm just setting out, there's two guys from the local councils who freely give their own images for our use too (which are created in their spare time).

In my mind, and certainly with the other two guys, we just love seeing our images used.

Being able to use images that have a personal story behind them also gives the guide a better feel for our consumers, as there is that personal reflection in there too. There is also an option for them to be used on our website, which is currently being redesigned. Ultimately, if people feel we're ripping them off, then they have the option to purely ignore my invitation.

In terms of crediting, I hope to place a credit at the front of the guide, naming all contributors. I also hope to place a piece in the guide about our Flickr account, and perhaps I could get something in their two. Finally, there could well be the option to name the contributor as part of the image caption, but essentially, I don't want to over promise at this time.

We did have aims to get a photography competition sorted for this guide, but unfortunately, we just didnt have the time to sort it, and two companies we approached to support it in terms of sponsoring/prizes just didn't see the potential we thought it had. However, for 2011's guide, I'd like to see a proper competition sorted, and would love to have some images exhibited at venues across the county.

If you'd like to get in touch privately, or indeed meet sometime, I'd be more than willing to do so. I have a very open mind in terms of this, and would be happy for thoughts both positive and constructive.

Cheers people. kev

Hi,

I can see how this would definitely benefit the Tourist Board in particular, as you say you're really asking for free publicity images. You'll probably have some success I'd imagine, although it probably depends on what sort of quality images you are looking for.
To be honest the Flickr link is unlikely to benefit anyone to any significant degree - a fairer option would possibly provide acknowledgement/links on the main Tourism site.

The photography competition sounds a more interesting proposition to me personally and I'll "watch this space" for next year to see what develops.

Simon
