Checked your lottery tickets?

I was told that it was statistically more likely to win the lottery by finding a ticket rather than buying one. If it's true, it really wouldn't surprise me.

Gambling is just a tax on people that are bad at maths.

Did the pools and now do the lottery, two quid a week won't break the bank.
They're really are some miserable old buggers on here.

Drinking and smoking are also a waste of money, spent my share on them too over the years.

Did a fiver a week when it first started. Won a tenner in week 1 then about £90 in week 2. Kept playing until we were all square and haven't bothered since.

I know a bloke that won £1M just before Christmas 3 yrs ago, on the raffle draw that you get with one of the tickets. On the day he came back to work after Christmas, when he planned on handing in his notice and taking early retirement, he slipped on ice getting out of his car and fell and broke his hip, got paid out for a claim, as someone hadn't gritted the car parks. Turned out he was too young to take retirement at the time anyway, so he remained off sick, then a voluntary redundancy / early retirement was offered around a year later, by which time he was old enough so took a good payout.

A guy at our works won £71m a couple of years ago. About a year ago a work colleague saw him in the local co-op buying a newspaper and more lottery tickets. Obviously the jackpot wasn't enough.

I don't know about a big winner but some years back when I had a couple of quid flutter on the Lotto about every week I was behind one guy who was well dressed and well spoken and he bought £25 of entries. I remarked in passing to the sales assistant about that being a lot to throw at the Lotto and she commented that he came in every week and always spent £25 each time.

Some folk have a sizeable disposable income to spend that much each week on Lotto, at £1300 per year !

My favourite statistic on winning the lottery is that if you buy the ticket more than 90 minutes before the draw, you are more likely to die before the draw than to win*... From R4 "More or Less" some years ago before their focus turned to coronavirus.

*Obviously depending on the draw, taking an average player and so forth.
