Hey,
I have recently made a new website and I just wondered if you could check it out and tell me what you think :) any ways I can improve it would be greatly appreciated!

www.stansfieldphotography.co.uk

thanks everyone

Hi

The usage of fonts and alignment and general typography is quite messy and left heavy

The use of watermarks is very distracting, and heavyhanded

The pin borders arrund some images and not others is also a bit unpolished

the use of a left border for text unde the images looks messy

Advice.

Center in the browser

Sort out the image borders

Loose the watermarks

Nail down the typography and font usage (understand why you are using a font. reversed text is the hardest on a screen, as anti-aliasing of the edges is going against you

Focus the site - on the photography, and where the test is important, the text

Best wishes

R

i think some of your suggestion are down the template design and not the op design ideas

Again, not wanting to start the last argument I inadvertantly started, I look at things "as is" and ignore whatever template limitations there might be... which to be fair is how 99% of internet users judge a site

Speeling!

You can get away with poor spelling on a forum such as this but there's no excuse on the front page of your web site.

hey richard, thanks for that, i can change most of the template around so i will try my best to alter the layout.

Hey john, can you please tell me the speeling mistakes as i have just ran i through a spell check and it cant seem to find the mistake?

thanks guys

Liam

Liam. You attend a college.

Now that should prompt a re-read....

Not sure I like the intro, if it's your site introduce yourself as you. I would much prefer to 'think' that I was getting to know you and not be 'formally' introduced by your Mum.

I would not advertise my price, but prefer to hook someone in who was interested, and develop a business relationship.

Good luck with your venture anyway, you got get up & go.

A quick look picks up: recive, collage, Thankyou

Ok, this is me and what I like is going to be different to other people. :)

I hate 3rd person with passion. I would change that to first person. Maybe a logo is needed so its not so plain. Copyright on the portfolio pictures is a very bad idea. Puts people off right away. Re check your spelling, words like "comission" should be commission. Re check it and re check it again. Have a look at some of the sites on the clikpic website. There showcase website have some great ideas. - http://www.robstringer.co.uk/ Have a look at how he sets his prices out. Great use to clikpic. Clikpic can be great if you use it in the right way, and many people don't. I normally like the Contact Us at the end of the link section.

Tad picky about the last one, sorry if im coming across bossy / harsh.

How can a pro be studying at "collage" That whole intro stinks of being a bit of a dick. No offence BTW I haven't met, you just looking at it as a client. 3rd person annoys Carl, Carl cannot get along with the whole idea. Carl thinks maybe I could be a more personal way to introduce yourself, but then again Carl could be wrong.

You say you will photograph a wide range of subjects, but only have galleries of flowers, landscape and cars. Also you could do with getting more photographic content on there.

May sound like I am being an ass about al this, but am looking on it in terms of your prices which can go up to £240.

Lastly, and I may be wrong, but those 2 guestbook entries sound a little too generic and made up. You to me just do not have the content to get the first comment, and the second may be true, but just sounds generic. Also a guestbook is open for visitors usually, rather than they email you and you put them up, again just an observation, and no offence meant in any of what I say, just honest constructive feedback.

To me it seems not a bad effort but as above it just slightly smacks of someone blagging it somewhat about their experience and ability. The college/collage thing is one example.

The pictures themselves don't really stand out to me, and the watermark is way OTT.

I think everyone here has covered the issues with the site, even ding76uk who seems unable to use the edit button :p lol

Going by the comments made here about the spelling in the home page, I would hazard a guess that you wrote the first guest book comment as well as there are some mistakes in there that are similar to the home page ones.

Making a website isn't easy, but I am sure you'll get there :D

I'm not expert but from a laymans point of view my impression was pretty good. I like the layout and text you used. I found it very easy to navigate and quickly view the photos in the galeries. If I wanted to buy the prices were easy to find.

The only thing I din't like was the big watermarks. I would also like to see a bigger preview of the phots as i doubt i would buy without seeing more details.

Quality of shots is a bit mixed. I would only make my very best photos available. As someone else mentioned the ariel shots are pretty poor quality.

Yeah sorry it did seem like a rant, sorry. Just been doing the same thing to my own site upgrade, so was in the same mode. Besides it was late and I am on strong painkillers, lol.

Thats one way to get your post count up. :D

Hey thanks for the replies, I am actually a pro as I work for a few local websites, but I am also still studying at college.
The first comment was actually of someone who bought one of my photographs but not through my website, and I don’t know who the 2nd comment is off.
Thanks for all the advice, I think I will take the watermarks off as you are not the only people who have advised me to do so. As for the other points of advice I will try my best to rectify them.
Thank you all for your help
Liam

Hi Liam, here's my thoughts, the site is ok but you do have to click on quite a lot of thumbnails before you can see a bigger image and even then the bigger images are still rather small. It's quite easy to find your way around the site although I'm not sure why Aerial Photography has it's own section and isn't just a sub section of galleries? It implies that you specialise in aerial photography.

I think you should definately review your choice of images and really only show case the absolute best ones, these photos should be technically perfect and many of them are not. For example, in the Cars gallery it looks like you just walked into a show room and snapped some pictures, ok so you using a different angle but where's the post processing? I would expect a serious professional car photographer to have removed all the reflections and spots of light on the bonnet and to have done a better job in air brushing out some of the number plates (I'm referring to the Maserati picture where you can see white smudges around the edges of the plate). Also quite a lot of the images look very dark on my monitor, as monitors can vary so much I would recommend leaning towards being too bright rather than too dark, also some of the images seem quite soft, this may be down to resolution or compression issues, I'm not saying your photos are out of focus just that they are not being displaying to their full potentional.

I would do away with different galleries and just have 1 page of mixed thumbnails which blow up to far bigger images. It seems odd to have a gallery with just 2 images in it, why not wait until you have at least 10 top rate images before creating a separate gallery.

I don't mean to be hard, but photography is a fun job and that's why there are literally hundreds of people each week who decide to start up as a freelance photographer, you have to be REALLY good to stand out from the crowd. It is a very crowded market.

Keep trying, and I hope you find these comments useful. :)

On the front page an 'i' instead of 'I'; also on the gallery pages as well as a 'bottem'.
