Check for blown whites

On the Canon's we get 'blinkies' where the blown highlights flash black/white to warn of clipping highlights. Not quite sure on the Sony's but this may help...

DRO. The Sony A550 also includes Sony's optional D-Range Optimizer function, which works from a single shot and hence isn't limited to static subjects. A function of Sony's BIONZ processor, D-Range Optimizer can function automatically or in one of five manual strength levels, and adjusts the tone curve to avoid blown highlights and blocked shadows.

what are blinkies?

I used to think they were Scottish biscuits... but they are pixels that are blown-out (signal strength over the limit). On the canons they show as flashing areas on the view-screen. You take the shot again with a lower exposure or shade the bright areas, and they go away. Or you use 'recovery' in the CS RAW editor to pull back the blow-outs.
