I am looking to get a flash unit for my 350D. I don't really have a budget in mind but I want to find the cheapest options I can as I am only starting out and can't justify spending £££££ at this stage. I have heard a lot of good things about the speedlite range and I am confused about the different models available, I have also heard a few problems with voltage on non Canon equpiment.

I know you get what you pay for but I am not trying to be a professional, Just improve on my standard equipment.

Can anybody point me in the right direction of a decent flash unit that is suitable for the 350D that wont break the bank.

Chris

Extra costs factor in extras such as master/slave capabilities, etc. but if you won't be needing them as of yet then I'd take a look at the 430EX, an excellent speedlight imo.

Then next ones up have a bit more power to them but it all depends on what you're shooting tbh. If you need as much power & reach as possible then you should save to get the 580EX (I or II) imho but the 430 is a very capable flash in its own right & should see you fine for most situations

There are also the Sigma & Metz brands but I don't have enough experience of them to recommend (do make sure they have ETTL compatability though as it's so useful to have)

You sure the onboard flash is not good enough for you? If not then some idea of what you want to be able to do with it would help us give better advice.

i just bought the sigma EF 530 DG Super ETTL for my canon 400 for £150.. I'll post some comments later on..

A cheap Canon option is to buy an old Canon EX model from ebay. There are plenty of 380ex and 420ex auctions so take your time and make sure you get a good price.

380's seem to go for £60-70.
420's for £70-£120!

I just picked up a 420 with an omni-bounce for £75 and it'll do me fine while I'm learning the ropes.

One point to check - does the 350D have FEC (flash exposure compensation) on board - if it doesn't you will find yourself restricted with the lower end models as there is no adjustment on the flash itself.
