cheaper alternative to SB-E1 flash bracket...

Hi all, this may sound like a really silly question, but just wanting to know if anybody knows of a cheaper alternative to the SB-E1 Canon flash bracket, for a 350D? As 120-pounds (average price) seems a bit much for a bit of plastic on the side of a camera, lol....(?) thanxxx
 
The bracket has an unusual design - the stroboframe style brackets would be a more common alternative. These are still expensive, although cheap versions (but still well built) appear on eBay all the time. You will also have to budget for a TTL cord (off shoe cord as Canon call them), which is included in the price of the SB-E1.

"Manfrotto do a really nice bracket - its bigger than many and lets you move the flash further away. It's the MN233B - I use that with a Canon Off Camera Cord 2."

Or, Stroboframe are the other option as Alan says
 
I just bought myself an SB-E2 bracket off ebay for £90 it comes with the off camera cable so theres about £35 of the value there.

The bracket is really well made and because im using it with a 580ex the flash bolts to the side of it and is solid.

I also have a bracket for the 350d that puts the flash up above it that looks like this one


Heres a cheaper version i found - Flash bracket that could be modded slightly but you would still need an off camera cord.

I got one off these ebay linky (the Canon version). Flash + bracket + cord cost less than the canon cord :)
 
jessops and jacobs do a straight bracket, which you see alot of press guys using, they are about 10, but you still need your ettl cable, which is supplied with the canon bracket

The cable is available separately as a canon accessory. Jessops do their own version which has a slightly longer cable.
 
Oh, and also does anybody know of a flashgun tripod, compatible with a 430EX (note, I lost the little back flashgun stand it came with!)?
As all of the sudden I've been doing lots of parties/events and would like to use my flashgun softbox on a tripod near the cam.... any ideas?

No specific flash tripod that I can think off. Once you take the gun off the camera you have to make a choice how to fire it. I suspect the little stand is to allow the flash to be used as some sort of slave - i.e triggered by a flash attached to the camera. What you could do is buy a small optical slave (do a search for slave ay 7dayshop.com). They have a Hama slave which is treaded at the base to allow attachment to a standard tripod screw - simply select a table top tripod and screw on the slave. The flash simply slides onto the hotshoe attachment on top of the slave and should be triggered every time the on camera flash fires. I say should because I'm not sure if this will work with your 430EX. If you want a spot of advice, stick with the flash atttached to the camera (use a bracket if you wish) and use the little setup described above to trigger a cheap manual flash away to one side. The on camera flash should guarantee good exposure and the off camera manual flash helps to add a bit of depth and light up the background which very often goes black.
