Anything wrong with learning to light with this sort of cheap diy lighting setup?

Seems to me to be a better way to learn than buying one of the ebay kits which people seem to think are a bit crap. Plus it costs next to nothing and is pretty easy on the brain.:)
 
We used to use those methods before studio flash was available...

A single flash head + reflector will do the same job much more easily, and probably for less money.

And you won't need to use the camera on a tripod, you won't need to use a high ISO you won't need to worry about subject movement and you won't dazzle your model.
