I know that this will have about 5000 of you howling in bewildered rage, but what exactly is wrong with £20+/- 2.2x tele-converters?

Exactly what teleconverter model are you referring to, Davie.

quality of the optics, hence quality of the images you produce. You're place extra glass between your lens and the camera which will effect autofocus speed and reduce the amount of light by 2 f-stops reaching your camera. You don't have to buy the expensive branded TCs, there are some cheaper alternatives like kenko out there, but I would definitely avoid £20 glass

Thanks Pete.

I got a similar converter to your example when I got my original Canon 550D kit. I also got a wide angle 0.4x converter at the same time. I tried the 2x on my kit 18-55 IS lens and the IQ was horrendous. It looked like I was shooting through a layer of vaseline and after trying it twice it was consigned to the waste bin. The wide angle converter was surprisingly good compared to the 2x version but IMO still not anywhere near as good as the lens on its own. I have a Kenko 1.4x Pro300 DGX converter and also a Canon Mk3 1.4x and 2x and while the Canon ones are without a doubt better than the Kenko, for the price of the Kenko it's a great bit of kit. It gives very good IQ and it's compatible with most of my lenses compared to the Canon ones so that is a big bonus.

the cheap screw on ones are mostly bad, but the expensive screw on ones can be good, have a oldish 1.7 panasonic thats great

:ty: Many thanks for the advice lads. It looks as if I'll have to go and dust-off the wallet. (I am a Scot, so it doesn't come easy! :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:)
