Lucky man that i am i've been charged with recomending some cheap smart phones for work

the parameters are:

will be used for twitter/facebook updates (and as a phone)

must have a semi decent camera (to take pics to tweet)

Must be android or windows (IT won't install Itunes on our system)

body only - we want to buy the body and go to a sim only plan

Must be new - Work won't buy second hand

As cheap as possible within reason.

Any thoughts ?

No but a windows phone will install Zune on your system if you want to back it up etc and its awful....

In which case must either be android, or must be capable of updating itself without being connected to the work network

i cant wait for my windows phone to die, and i will not be getting another mobile/smart phone of any kind.

You dont need itunes to update an iphone though, can be done over wifi.

HTC desire c £150 from expansys for a reasonable android phone?

work doesn't have wifi, and iphones aren't cheap anyway

HTC desire could be a good call , also looking at the huwaei C300, the ZTE blade III, and the orange san fran 2

Samsung do one for about £100 ish. Galaxy ace. Friend has one. Seems to do everything ok.

Our work issue the Blackberry Curves and they so everything the work needs... Personally I'm an IPhone fan and think you get what you pay for.

The HTC desire camera is rather poor, also onboard space soon becomes inadequate unless you root it to put almost all apps on the SD card

Have a Google for "ZTE Blade III". I have the original Blade (Orange San Francisco) and it was a good, cheap smartphone a few years back. The new one is getting good reviews. Not sure whether it will meet your needs on the SIM front, or how easy it might be to unlock, but certainly a bargain.

I've bought a Nokia Lumia 620 to try the windows 8 experience, £160 and it does everything you'd expect / want from a smartphone.

*It's been bit of a culture shock coming from my S3

It's not had the urge to install Zune yet

Not true. Windows Phone 8 does not need Zune...file transfer is simple drag and drop.

The new Lumia 520/620 are fantastic quality low-range smartphones.

I have the original wp7 and drag and drop is not an option. Device not even recognized without zune.
Wp8 may be different but I have no intention of finding out.

i officially hate mobiles

One of the things to be aware of on cheap phones is the amount of internal memory. This will limit the amount of apps you can use.
I am using Google drive for documents and dropbox for photos.
