Yes
total begineer here and looking for a cheap/2nd hand dslr to try and get into it

hoping to a bit of motorsport and just general stuff

what camera do you recommend?

thanks

I would be interested in this too...

What do the main Motorsport fans on here use?

Where are you located and what type of motorsport do you want to shoot.

im in scotland, knockhill is my nearest track

would mainly be looking at btcc and trackdays etc at knockhill and what ever else i can find

also would want to be able to take general pictures aswell

I've been taking motorsport photos for fun for the last 10 years ago, initially with a Minolta 7000i (film SLR) and now I use a Sony A700 with a Sony 70-200/2.8 (and Minolta 300/4 if a long way back), however that's not cheap.

Since I am only familiar with the Sony and Minolta range, cheap would be an A450 (£299 with kit lens from Comet, if the offer is still on). Will do 5fps and has a CMOS sensor. Add a Minolta 70-210/4, £100-120 second hand. Will have enough reach on a crop body on the smaller tracks, not so good for places like Silverstone where you are miles back and 300mm of reach is needed.

I suggested a 5fps capable body as when someone is spinning or crashing 3fps seems terribly slow.

For the cars at Knockhill a 200mm lens is enough, a fast (f/2.8) 300 is handy for the bikes though.

I have a Canon 500D and use my 55-250 IS lens for most Motorsport at Three Sisters, OUtlon Park and the rallying I have been to recently. I am by my own admission a very new camera user and with only basic knowledge, but have managed some reasonable results. The kit that has been suggested above, would do you fine to get started and beyond.

prefer closer to £200 than £300 but happy to go 2nd hand

dont see that kit on comets website

You'll not get anything new if £200-300 is your budget for both body and lens, so secondhand looks like the way to go...

If I had the money a 100-400L would probably be what I would buy, my 70-300 doesn't have quite enough reach and gets a bit soft at full stretch :(

Prime IQ is awesome but way too restrictive in motorsport IMO! Depends on what tracks you will be using it at as to what reach you require.

Personally, I would recommend not buying anything now and saving your money and increasing the budget to around £300/400, motorsports season has only a month or 2 to go and £200 isn't a great budget for camera and lens, even 2nd hand.

Have a look at Ffordes, Mifsuds, MPB, Digital Depot, Park Camera's, Camtech as good 2nd hand dealers of camera equipment and you can also gauge the prices. Would avoid eBay as you're buying blind and don't know the history of the camera.

You could pick up a Nikon D40x or Canon 400D (or 20D) body for around £150/200, but you'll need another £100/200 for a lens

Knock Hill a good circuit for close action, 200/250mm is probably all you need, but if you're venturing anywhere else 300mm a minimum, I was using 600mm at Silverstone last weekend for the WSB's
