Hi all,

My 15 old son enjoys taking photos with his iPhone 5s and seems to have some creative flair. He's asked about owning a "real" camera for himself and he's interested in a system with interchangeable lenses. I was thinking that a used M43 camera from someone like Panasonic might fit the bill? Perhaps a GF1 / 2 or G1 / G2? To be honest I don't know much about M43 but lenses seem quite reasonably priced used and I thought I'd not need to spend big to get him sorted with a beginners kit. I'm not sure about image quality from old M43 but assume they should complete well against an iPhone 5s for indoor shots and much better outdoor?

What would you recommend for a very budget setup? perhaps a 14-42 lens and an old body plus maybe a fast(wish) prime? Smaller the better I think so make sure he uses it!

Many thanks
Steve

G1 resembles a DSLR - in shape not in size and is pretty good - especially if he fancies using a few "old" MF lenses, (with adaptors)

It's very cheap (now) used

agree 20mm f1.7 is good

M43 is interesting

The Olympus Pen E-PL1 is fairly good too and I have seen them go under £50 on eBay

I think that it is useful to have a viewfinder ....... in such a case

Agreed, but it's for a 15 year old, used to phone cams and P&Ss!

G3
I had one before my D7000 and it was a great wee camera. Get them for great prices now.

thanks. To be honest, the G3 looks great, but the viewfinder would never get used. I think I'll go for one of the GF series.
