Premier inn would be my suggestion, I stayed in one for my anniversary in November and for the prices (only about £46, so a bit less than you've been quoted) in was great. Was far nicer than the holiday inn I stayed at the week before with work, and those rooms were £100 plus!

If you want dead centre, it's hard to get cheap.
About the cheapest would be the Travelodge (York Central), it's at the end of Piccadilly and it's an easy walk into the centre from there. There is also a Quality Inn (Hotel 53) on Piccadilly as well but dont know about pricing. Watch out though as hotel parking is scarce in the centre.
You could also try the Ramada Jarvis on Tadcaster Road, not very nice but often does cheap deals and very well placed for the pubs and bars on Mickelgate.

We (2) stayed in Hilton York (Nov 2007) opposite Clifford's Tower £220 4 nights B&B and two evening meals included. Booked a couple of months in advance. There will still be some deals about...if your quick.
As a note ref Premier Inn...we stayed in the one in Edinburgh in Dec 08. Sunday morning at 08:00 their was a laundry delivery. At check out we were asked if we enjoyed our stay and simply mentioned the delivery. Without asking we got the night for free...it's part of their "good night guarantee". Always worth mentioning these things

Have a look on laterooms.com or octopustravel.com (could be .co.uk). Have had some fab deals for hotels in York. Last time we went which was about 4 years ago, we stayed in Ramada Encore which was central, close to all the bars and nightlife and cost us £20 each. The hotel was fairly new and was great.
