Just add three quid extra and you can get Lencarta-branded E27 105W ones p&p free. Guaranteed to have the right colour temperature and CRI, and as used by Will Cheung in one of his recent editorials in Advanced Photographer magazine and won "Best in Test" award beating Bowens, Lastolite, Paterson and Interfit.

Sorry about the shameless advertising. :D I genuinely think it's a better bet for you.

Cheers, may well go for yours as given the chance I do prefer to buy from a company with some 'presence'.

I'd also be looking for some cheap 'holders' - may even up at Ikea, but if you've got any suggestions... can't justify the 'quad' option you have, however nice it'd be to have a few of those :).

If the Quadlite (with 80x80cm softbox included) is beyond your budget then you can certainly use household lamps. There's nothing special electrical-wise about the bulb holders, except those in the Quadlite are made of heat-resistant ceramics in case anyone ever wants to fit hot high-wattage tungsten bulbs in them. The 105W CFL bulbs don't have much of a heat issue.

Going down the IKEA route will pretty much remove you the option of using studio light modifiers like umbrellas or softboxes. You will probably need a LARGE lamp shade to direct the light well, such as those found in industrial/warehouse lighting, because the bulbs are monster-sized.

The alternative option to think about is to get a cheap "studio" lamp holder with an umbrella hole. That way you'll at least be able to use a modifer or two. If I remember correctly they cost just a few pounds on eBay.
