Where's the best place to get film developed/scanned and possibly printed (6x4) cheaply these days? I've just bought a Nikon EM and an OM10 and need to see which one I should keep (if any of them).

I had some done at boots a few months ago, I think they cost around £6 for Dev, scan and print at 6x4, the price was ok, but the scanning was appaling!!

Any recommendations would be gladly received.

Edit: forgot to mention that it's C-41 film that I want developing (at the moment)

I think you'll find quality dev, scans and prints and cheap are pretty much impossible. I use the likes of Tesco's and Asda for test rolls but I only get them to process the film. I have had Asda scan as well and it wasn't too bad but I normally scan at home so it's not really an issue. TBH £6 for dev, scan and print is pretty reasonable, if the scans were badly done ie scratches, dust, hairs etc then I'd take them back and get them to do them again but if they just scan at a low resolution then there's not much you can do apart from ask them to scan at a higher res but they'll probably charge you more.

There are some labs that will do a good job but they're not cheap. You could try the likes of Peak Imaging, Club 35 or The Darkroom they all seem to do good work but I've only used them for processing so I've never had any scans done by them so can't really comment on that side of them.

Film Developing thread on page 2 of F&C.

I beginning to think we should have a sticky for this topic... :)

Thanks, I'll try Photo Express as my "local" Tesco's is about 45mins away (well there's one half an hour away, but they don't do photographic stuff).

The Boots scans were low res AND poorly done, I won't bother with them any more.

Cheers

P.S. Yes a "Developing" Sticky would be a great idea.

For what you want (dev+scan+prints), it's not especially competitive at £7 per roll, but the scans are excellent (3000x2000, which many processing labs consider higher quality and thus charge a premium to do) and if you use the dev+scan only, it's £5.50 (and less than a fiver if you are a student). Good with communication, both via email and their Facebook page.

My preference for C-41 is Genie Imaging, since I prefer dev-only (don't need prints - I can get prints done myself for cheaper, and only the ones I want, and I don't need them scanned because I do it myself, second hand scanners are everywhere), but I drop it off in person so I don't know how much it would come to for mail order.

Rob - if you (or anyone else) will volunteer to pull something together and post it and I'll apply the chewing-gum mate

I'd be happy to do something like that, unfortunately I'm going on holiday to Turkey for 2 weeks tomorrow so it might have to wait until after then.

How about making it sort of like a review thread for each place? You know give it a mark out of 5 or 10 for price, quality, time (for postal services) etc and any comments and with supermarkets/high street shops list the actual branch as quality varies so much between them.

I know there is a similar thread from a while back on one of the UK film flickr groups - maybe worth a look.
