Can anyone tell me if these are worth purchasing? I was thinking of purchasing one but I'm not sure what wattage I require (I only shoot in my living room) and a stand and umbrella will be required. Continuous lighting much of a benefit?

Point me in the right direction. :)

No they aren't worth it, same as the cheapo Interfit and Jacobs kits etc. They lack so much even in basics terms.

Best kits to go for are the Lencarta Smartflash system which Garry Edwards highly recommends, and the Elemental Genesis system both are similar spec and price.

Continuous lighting is really only best for product photography and even then most will still opt for flash.

Never going to be able to afford those. All the photos I've taken so far have been with borrowed interfit kit and were more than adequate for their purpose.

The Lencarta Smartflash is only a little more than an interfit kit. It would last you a lot longer too. Spare are also more easily obtained.. Start off with one or two lights and add another when you can...

something like this. they don't have to be great. just useable. (I found one with stand and umbrella earlier but can't find it now)

this was taken with just a 150w (at about 1/4 power) interfit and umbrella. looking to create similar lighting and use flash
gun for fill when needed.

does anyone know where to get cheap stands and umbrellas? Anywhere better than ebay? I'm not that keen on buying from ebay usually.

Speak to FITP (flash in the pan) on here, he sells pretty much anything to do with lighting accessories and has umbrellas and lighting stands that your after ;)

oh no, not Graham! :(

Not new for 30 quid, and if the power is to believed, its worth at least 2 or 3 flashguns, and includes the umbrella mount and swivel included.

Mains only though, thats the catch over flashguns.

Have you considered getting a couple of flash guns, they would do the job just as well.

I have a flash gun I was going to use in conjunction with this... which obviously cost quite alot more.

Mains isn't really a problem, I can use flashgun outside... when I venture out but I'm rather attached to warmth that comes with inside these days. :)

The cheapo stands and even universal fit softboxes are ok, I've got a couple. Fine for non pro and occasional use as you suggested. I'm sure you wouldn't want to be using them if you have a queue outside, but for a gig once a week they should be fine :)

I have two of them and use them for flag holders.

Having heavier stands would be useful in the long term, but they are perfectly serviceable.

I've got hummmmm, thousands and thousands invested in lighting equipment.

I sometimes feel like just getting this type of kit that you are considering and seeing how good I really am.... if you know what I mean.

50 quids worth of gear. Good enough?

Where would I get an adaptor for the stand to support an umbrella?

I like cheap and cheerful stuff, requires you to get more creative... then when I use a proper studio I'm slightly overwhelmed with all the expensive stuff!

The studio gun listed above has an umbrella adapter built into it.

Do you mean for your hotshoe guns?

The brolly holder is built in!

Ah, when I was reading through the reviews someone said you needed an adaptor. Well that's fine. I'll get this strobe, stand and umbrella after christmas then.

Shall do. I'll take awesome photos with this lot and you'll all be buying it they next day. ;)
