I have just been looking on eBay and have found a lot of battery's for a D80 on there, literally just a couple of quid each. There was also a lot of cheap battery grips.
I just wondered if anybody on here has ever used any of them and could they damage my camera? I feel a bit dopey for asking but I don't want to buy a couple thinking I got a bargain and then next minute destroy my much loved camera.

Any suggestions?

Cheers in advance:thumbs:

I've bought several Canon compatible batteries from Kerso on eBay and found they were great at a fraction of the cost of genuine Canons. They weren't complete peanuts either though - about a tenner each I recall.

Just make sure that the mAh rating is greater than or equal to the batteries you have at the moment. That's the biggest point!

I bought a Nikon compatible one for about half the price as the Nikon branded version. It works ok - but lasts about half the time before it needs charging again.

So its ok for a emergencey battery I suppose, thanks for the help guys:thumbs:

I've got 4 of the ebay batteries for the D80 and they've all been great, well, I had one that seemed to be faulty and kept draining, but it only did it in the D80 and was fine in the D50 , the rest were fine. Unfortunately they don't work in my D300, but hopefully I can resurrect them for the D200 :)

Always be very careful with really cheap batteries. They can wreck your gear.

The Photix grip is good quality and great value (but if you can find a YXTM one I reckon they are better) but don't buy it from etefore, they are not good people to deal with (search for etefore on here) also the high delivery charge is another scam for reducing their ebay charges. Find one from another seller with an honest delivery charge.

I have 4 ebay cheap [tenner-ish] batteries from fleabay and all are as good as the nikon originals, last as long chargewise and as I have been using them for between 1 and 2.5 years, dont look like wrecking my gear in anyway.

As for battery grips, my gut feeling is to go with nikon as seen plenty of stories of after-market ones effing up totally, but as I havent yet got one, probably best those with more experience advise you ;)

Personally, I would go for cheapish ones from a reputable seller rather than an anonymous e-bayer. I have used ones from 7dayshop for the past few years and not had a problem with them.

Flash-in-the-Pan, are your batteries EN-EL3 replacements or EN-EL3e replacements? The plain 3s will NOT fit the D200 or D300 but the 3es should. The fact that you say your replacements don't fit the 300 would suggest that they won't be suitable for the 200 either.

Another vote for 7dayshop. I bought a spare battery for my GX10, and it works just as well as the original, and cost £7 rather than nearer £40!

All my aftermarket ones that I bought from Ebay were EN-EL3es for the D80, but the D300 doesn't recognisde any of them, I'm sure they'll work fine in the D200, if not they'll work in the D70 or D70s. I have far too many Nikon bodies

I have a few 3rd party bits
  • 6 batteries
  • 1 grip
  • 1 Remote shutter
and have never had a problem with any of them.

You should have no problem with the batteries.
But I couldn't bring myself to trust a grip.

I just got 2 photix Battery's for £6, I found a review on another site and they sounded good:thumbs:

Remember to check the voltage and amperage. The D80 (and other Nikons) have the ability to see the battery condition - do you need a new battery? The OEM battery lasts for ever (until it runs out).

Grips. I have a mean money mentality, but I always smile at the thought of folk who spend a significant wad on an item, then skimp on the accessories. Why buy a porche and put cheap tyres on it?

Just my 2p worth.

I only use third party batteries - i have sold all the original canon ones i had - way way overpriced, the third party ones last longer and i can buy 5 for the same price - i feel sorry for canon 1d mk3 users - £100+ per battery...ouch

True that. Name brand batteries cost a lot for their respective cameras. I'll be heading out next week to buy some non name brand. I'm not too scared...

I use the BP-511As from 7dayshop for my 40D. I've even thought about selling my genuine batteries on ebay.
