Further to me asking about basic tablets, I think I now want some advice about netbooks - the only real requirements are some limited word processing (ie writing a few letters a week) and internet access.
Something that will still be of use in a couple of years, so ideally a new-ish version of windows, and as cheap as possible - if not windows then you may need to explain in slow and clear words of not more than 4 letters or I'll get muddled...
Are those Asus Eee PC netbooks any good, and if so what sort of spec is worth going for ?
Thanks for any help !

I still have a Samsung NC10 I keep for use when travelling places I wouldn't want to take an expensive ultrabook. You can pick them up for peanuts these days and are perfectly fine for the uses you describe (I run Lightroom on it....not perfect, but it works for backing up while on holiday and editing/posting a few snaps online)

The Asus are fine machines. High quality manufactureres.
Also very much worth considering Samsung.
I wouldn't touch any other make.
Avoid Acer. They have a very high returns rate.

Some Asus eepcs are Linux based rather than Windows which can be a boon to the experienced or a PITA to us mortals!

My netbook is a Medion, running xP as the OS and a selection of software. It has 3 USB 2 ports so plenty for a mouse, optical drive and external HDD if required. Built in wi-fi. IIRC, it's basically an MSI Wind with a different badge on it. Battery life isn't fantastic but adequate (just!). Keyboard (a must IMO if there's any more than extremely basic typing's involved) is big enough for my fat fingers, although I do have a tendency to hit the caps lock button by accident when aiming for A or left Shift (but I do that on full size keyboards too). Screen's too small for any but basic photo editting - lucky that I only use it for storage, backup and adding captions to postcards!

Recently bought my wife a new netbook - not sure what it is - I just handed over the card and punched in the PIN. I know it's Win7 but that's it! Can't even tell you what it cost. Since it's with her at work, I can't even look at it to tell you more. Pretty sure it came from PCWorld on a special offer.
