Hi guys, I'm looking at putting through a few rolls of B&W film (10-20). Was wondering if there were are cheap 135 brands or film typea that I could try. Ideally 800 but happy to push 400 too.

Nowt cheap faster than 400. I would try either kentmore or foma for cheap 35mm.

Kentmere 400 isn't bad and it is cheap, but I've not tried pushing it yet. Its still pretty grainy at 400...

Pushing + cheap film = not going to happen unless you like big grain (we'll ignore Asha's results from Vista Plus for now).

The 'premium' ISO400 films are superb, have an excellent reputation, are easy to load on developing spirals, and give proven results. The cheaper ones don't have a bad reputation, and some of the Fomapan films do give a nice look, but the cost difference is relatively little.

I realised what I was paying extra for in medium format especially - the emulsion is much thicker with the better films.

If it's just cheap then...

:clap::clap::clap:Lucky 100:clap::clap::clap:

I know you wanted faster and I've never tried pushing it but it would be worth a go at this price.

Mr Cad

£2 a roll if you buy 10 rolls or £1.62½ each if you buy 40 rolls :D

I thought you wanted cheap?

4.54 a pop, only bought 3 rolls. Will continue looking for other brands but price differential isn't alot with kentmere or foma

thanks, I'll take a look. I ordered from process supplies and it included postage.

Ooh, I like the look of that Lucky 100! A trip to Mr Cad might be in order when the snow's cleared!

It's an Aladdin's cave I could spend hours and £££'s in there, definitely worth a visit.

Tri-X and TMAX are both reasonably priced IMO, not 'cheap' as such, but very reasonable and can be had under £4 per roll. Even HP5+ can be around £4.50 or less.

I personally prefer Neopan and TMAX (and delta 400 too if it wasn't so expensive) even with pushing they retain a smooth and subtle grain compared to tri-x and HP5

Out of interest, where do people by Kentmere from? the prices I've seen are barely cheaper (if any) than HP5.

that B&W film from mr. cad looks good value, but only 100ISO? bit slow considering you were after 400 - 800 film? the results certainly look good from your two examples though, Nick. If i used 100 speed B&W film, i'd probably buy it!

Mr. Cad's service is great though, I bought 40 rolls of expired Reala for 60, :)

I have shot a roll of Lucky 100 at 400 and developed it in Rodinal 1+100 for an hour and it came out a lot better than I expected. There are some shots in the massive thread.

Just had a look at those shots on your Flickr stream and they look like they stand up very well to a bit of pushing and stand developing, I shall have to give it a go.

First call photographic stock it for ~£2.50, their pretty steep delivery wise but if you get some chems at the same time its not so bad.

that is pretty cheap to be fair! most places I've seen have it at around £4 per roll.

so i ordered 120 instead of 135!

I can stick it into my Mamiya 645, but back to square one on the 135 front.

d'oh. I've nearly done the same myself! I often see an appealing price only to realise it's 120
