My wife is getting frustrated at our crap compact for taking snaps of Noah. I've just switched to Nikon and would like some advice on a small and dirt cheap DSLR that she can use my lenses on. Small and light is a priority.

If you have AF-S lenses then you could look at the D40/X/60 range - very good cameras and small and light. If not how about an older D50 or D70 that work with older screw driven lenses.

Most of these can be had for under £200 on here.

I had a D40 and it was a cracking little camera. I only upgraded for a D300 as I wanted better fps and better high iso capabilities (oh and I had upgradeitus:thinking:)

I believe that the cheapest and not surprisingly lightest new Nikon is the D3100 at about 400 quid but that's not exactly dirt cheap.

I loved my D60 for the fact that I could say 'turn it to green' if I gave it to my wife and she'd be able to get good shots without any hassle.

If you have AF-S lenses then look at the D40 Dean. The D3100 is only slightly lighter and the D40 has an electronic shutter so you can sync your off camera flash at any speed.

So you might find a use for it as well. ;)

I'd suggest a D40, Dean. Not only is it nice and light but it has a 1/500 sync speed and will do 1/4000 with a neutered TTL cable :naughty:

Thanks guys. I'm looking at the D40 for the high speed sync option for me too. :)

Although Ali says she doesn't need one I can't stand looking at the pictures from our compact. They make me wanna :gag:

I'd recommend the D40, cracker camera, which did me great until I got my D90.

Still have it and a couple of lenses and bits, so just have to get organised and get it up on the classified section, but time is my enemy at the moment.

I don't know what you're using to fire your lights Dean but from what I've read the new Cactus V5's are managing to sync upto 1/1000, which you'd be able to use with the D40. I have the RF-602's and they manage upto 1/800.

I use RF-602's. 1/800 sounds pretty useful.

A mate of mine just got a D40 with 18-55 and sigma 70-300 for £120, so If you can find a deal like that you wont go far wrong.

D40 or D70, I went back to a D70 from a D300 for financial reasons, it was great with the 1/500 sync speed and worked with all my lenses.. I went for the D70 because of the top LCD as I have got used to this over the years, could never get used to just the rear screen on the D40. now in the classifieds if your interested.. :-)
