Does anyone know where I can get a roll of 120 film scanned relatively cheaply? I recently shot a test roll and got it developed but i can't find anywhere that will scan it for for less than 3 quid a neg so its going to cost nearly £40!!

I've tried using my own scanner but its not backlit so they wont come out properly and I dont have a decent digital camera so I cant photograph them.

Any help would be most welcome, thanks!! :)

I'd be interested in the answer two. One thing that might be worth thinking about is that if you are going to get into doing 120 film, in the long run it would be worth your while just buying a scanner and doing it yourself (at least that's what I worked out).

***Anyone??****

Well I bought a scanner and it looks like everyone else has done the same rather than pay rip off UK prices.

Sorry, can't help as I do all my scanning myself. You can pick up a pretty decent flatbed film scanner for around £150 (ie. Epson 4490 or Canon 8800F) or a very good one for around £500 (Epson V750). Further than this, dedicated scanners are around the thousand pound mark and up.

I've heard good things about Ian Scovell's scanning service - very high quality, but you're going to pay for it

Thanks for the advice guys.

I've only got a few rolls of 120 to try out so I dont really want to buy a scanner as I might not use it again.

I've been looking around some more and the cheapest place I can find is these guys:

The Whole Picture Online

They can do dev, print and scan for £9 inc free postage. They will also scan a previously developed film for £9 too with free postage.

Hope this helps Hawker.

Thanks..........handy link as they are the cheapest for dev 120 neg film with free PP, still expensive for £4.25 (inc postage stamp) and just drives amateurs away to do home development, so the shop doesn't get enough orders and closes the 120 side down....a nasty circle that doesn't help some Joe public to start using medium format cameras.

Dev print and scan for £9 is ridiculously cheap! and dev only for £4.25 is equally so, you can't buy a pint for that in some places.

They don't say what file size they scan to so we'd have to know that before passing judgement.

I've had loads done by somebody I found on ebay. 75mb tiffs, some de-dusting but not totally, no processing, for £1 each (6x9 in my case). Smaller file size = smaller price. He's quite busy and takes ages to do mine - say 3 months to do a batch of 100, but I've told him I'm in no hurry and smaller quantities would be quicker. I'll email him and ask if he'd be willing for me to advertise his service here for the same price.

You have been brainwashed to accept high UK prices.....if in the US they can develope 120 film for $2 we should be able to do here for £2 for the amateur.

Just think use a RB67 and you get 10 shots for say a £2 film, with dev that's £6.25, BUT on average only 20-30% of the shots would be any good so you have just a NEG with 2, 3 or 4 shots on it for £6.25.

That would be really cool if you could. I did a search on ebay but I couldn't find anyone who scans 120, only 35mm.

I've just re-read my post and I'm wondering if I may have misled anybody. The £1 price was per frame - not a whole film, in case anybody thought that. Prices are for a 50mb file - 75p, a 75mb file £1, and 100mb - £1.25. Scanner is a top-end Fuji Lanovia drum scanner. No colour correction or sharpening done, and just a small amount of dust removal (I've had to clone out some small hairs/lint). His work is good. But....as I said, he's busy so he may take longer than you would like - or not.

Personally I've found this per frame pricing much better. I have had so many rolls with similar shots that it would be stupid to pay to have the whole roll scanned. I pick out the best using a lightbox and loupe, and only send the ones I want scanned.

Apart from this Whole Picture site, whose scan sizes are unknown, from my searching I've found the above rates to be good and the best I've come across so far for the file sizes produced.

I'm away from a now (i.e. this very minute) until Sunday night, so if the above rates are still attractive I should have a reply waiting for me then and I'll get back.

That's life using film m8 and what we had to accept all those years before digital came along and made 1000 shots as cheap as 10. No I'm not brainwashed, just realistic, think further, if they offer you dev for £2, what will the operator get paid? and are you happy for your film to be developed by a minimum wage slave?

***if they offer you dev for £2, what will the operator get paid? and are you happy for your film to be developed by a minimum wage slave?***

That's the problem with the UK, everybody wants high wages and don't want to work if they can't get it...what are the stats for those that have never worked, or are not working because they are better off on benefits, and no one is willing to admit they are just thick or dumb and not worth more than the minimum wage because of liberal leftie socialism.
So maybe some of the cheap labour swarming into the UK or those not working could get off their backsides and dunk some 120 film into developer on the cheap just for me.....eh

No you didn't mislead anyone, I was interested because the quality of the scanning would be miles better than the other place.

I for got to mention earlier, if your just looking for cheap processing, Snappy Snaps do it for £2.50 a roll but its colour only

Thanks that's handy to confirm as I did hear about that but the staff at my local out of London shop looked stupid when asked if they do 120 film. I'll have to find one in central London.
I don't mind a few spots on the neg as you can remove them with photoshop, I'm not a pro and have the time.

It all helps to encourage people to try medium format.......with slightly out of date cheaper film plus cheap processing.

Home and I have an answer. He'll be happy for you to send him your films to be scanned. His name is Matt Kaye email karmaan(at)ntlworld.com (or use the web site contact) and a web site at http://www.karmaan.co.uk/

As previously mentioned his rates are 50mb file - 75p, a 75mb file £1, and 100mb - £1.25. To get these (trade) rates he says you have to mention my name - Mike Evans. And no, I'm not getting anything out of it. You can send individual frames if you want to.

Some de-dusting done but not always totally. No colour processing or sharpening is applied so when you first see them they will look fairly flat and dull. It's up to you to make them come alive, and my own Velvias tweaked in Photoshop or Lightroom match the originals.

Now - timescales. I've only sent big batches - 100, 175 etc, and they take a few weeks as he's busy, and I'm in no hurry (I've had them for up to 5 years so a few weeks doesn't matter). Smaller batches should take less time, but I'm hoping nobody will get annoyed if they're expecting a quick turnround and it doesn't happen.

I hope some of you can make use of this.
