Charity night

Why Ruth, could you not have been open, say you will do it but for experience, let them know you may not get anything but if you do it will be available?

The pressure will be off, you get to try it out and learn a little bit more?

Phil.

I've got to admit I'm a bit sad you turned this down. As long as they know what they're getting there's no harm in it surely :bonk:

The trouble is you can tell them you don't know what you are doing til you are blue in the face, but a lot of (non photographic)people will assume 'fancy camera' - by which they mean any DSLR - equals the ability to take good shots and they will hear what they want to hear rather than what they are told right up to the point where the pictures come back and they arent satisfied

Then it will be airborne teddies, flying dummies and accusations of bad faith galore - okay they won't have a legal leg to stand on, but it isnt worth the hassle.

IMO ruth has done the right thing - if you don't know how to change your shutter speed then you arent ready to 'cover' anything in 3 weeks time.

Thats no reason not to pop along and take some shots without pressure, but thats very different to being the main tog on who they are relying for shots

As long as you set the expectation up front you can't go wrong - and set it really low. If they all turn out so bad that you don't wish to share them, then don't. What is going to let you down is the limitation of your kit. I doubt the 5100 with a kit lens will cope well enough in low light and moving objects - challenging enough in experienced hands. However, the whole experience would probably have been a learning curve..

Yes I am going to leave it. Really fancied doing it but we can't have everything in life. X

Well in that case, get out and try some shots when you can, this will give you an understanding of whats involved, the limits of your kit and abilities. All done for fun and to gain a bit of knowledge, afterall knowledge is power, and next time you will be a step closer ;)

Good luck chuckles

Good call, Ruth - and a brave one. A lot of people starting out wouldn't have had the guts to admit they were out of their depth, would have tried to bluster their way through it, and come out with a load of binnable rubbish, disillusioned clients, damaged confidence, and a black mark against their reputation before even getting out of the blocks. And then gone back to brain surgery or whatever they were doing before trying to become a photographer. Knowing when you're beat is all part of learning photography.

Now, see if you can find out who will be doing the shoot, and ask if you can tag along as assistant/2nd shooter. And get to grips with the shutter-aperture-ISO relationship. When you've got that, you've cracked the basis of all photography. And then next time, you won't be beaten.

Good luck!

Tough call to make, I've had to bow out of stuff I really wanted to shoot in the past and it can get you down.

But, the best thing you can do with this is turn it around and aim to be able to shoot that, say, next year. Practise, even if it is with a bunch of candles at home and an (un)willing volunteer. Get an idea what you are up against and how best to make the most of what gear you have - learn manual shooting and understand the controls you need for exposure. If it is the sort of thing you want to do in future, save for a more suited lens too.

Thanks everyone. Just wish I had someone to sit down with me and show me what's what. I am learning this all by myself and its not easy I must admit but I getting there x

Try your local FE colleges. I'll bet more than one will be offering a short evening course.

Stick with it. I'd say 99% of us learned by ourselves. I know I did. Just watch all the relevant tutorials and read, read, read. Has to be done, it's not going to magically happen by itself ;)
