charity muggers...........

How has race even been pulled into a discussion about charity?!

Can I have my grumpy knickers back when you've finished with 'em (and washed em)?

Oh Carol....now sit back and wait for the perverts to arrive.

PS: I like the skimpy black ones.:naughty:

I'd suggest that if someone 'doesn't like foreigners' then it's a pretty good bet that they're a racist.

I am worse than most - I accept, but I remember being totally gobsmacked by an Indian customer of mine once - I have never heard such bigotry, made me laugh though

Live and let live I say - just don't expect me to have the same point of view as you:razz:

I'm still p*ssed off about the Normans, 1066 & all that...

No it doesn't. Either can be deemed as racist. You missed my point though, I replied to the point that if I have to like someone or be a racist. If I didn't know someone why would I like them?

Of course you don't have to like someone or be a racist. If you don't know them then you neither like nor dislike them. But do you not think that if someone says 'I don't like foreigners' then that means that they are therefore racist ? Saying 'I don't like foreigners' is saying 'I don't like them, because they're foreign'. Surely that's the definition of racism ?

the point i was making is people find it too easy to pull things out of context, hear what they like to hear when it suits them and raise emotions by saying "ooh he must have meant that as a race thing."

if someone is rude to me or does something to upset me I will naturally say I don't like them, if a foreigner or someone of a different race does the same thing, then people like to automatically say i have only have the problem with them because of their race.

What i was saying is it doesn't matter if they are white black or just foreign, if they upset me because they were rude, i don't like them for that reason and not because of their ethnicity.

Agreed

blimey, i go away for a night with work and what happens... it twists and turns, like a twisty turny thing........

My only comment as a pedant is, is that "Africa is a continent, not a country!!"

Don't you know that grumpy knickers are, by definition, the opposite of skimpy and quite possibly, but not necessarily, black ?

and I wouldn't trust anyone who thought like that as far as I could throw 'em.

It's got nothing to do with thought Carol.

Disliking someone because they are foreign is xenophobic. Disliking someone because of their ethnic background/derivation is racist. They are two totally seperate things.

For the record I abhore both attitudes.....

.. unless we are talking about the French of course!

Just to be a pedant xenophobia refers to strangers not just foriegners......and as with all phobias more a fear then a dislike

But it's still OK to hate the French, right?

Please tell me that's OK.

to be a complete pedant:

xeno Gr - strange
foranus L - outside

In modern translation they are the same thing.

More pedantry

My mate Phillipe is foreign, but not a stranger. The two definitions are different, the same as the bloke who lives 200yds down the road is a stranger but not a foreigner.

Although I suppose he is French, so its OK to through things at him :)

Is being 'foreign' the same as 'not the same as me' or 'different to me'?

Do the French give a toss about being 'racist' 'cos they don't like 'les anglais'? Non

I meant that as long as I was free to dislike the Froggies, not how they viewed other people!!

I believe that England and France went to war with each other about 600 years ago and no armistice has been agreed, so we are still at war, therefore it must be ok to hate the French.

Actually the French don't give a toss about a lot of things but their alleged hating of 'les Anglais' is generally secondary to their dislike of Parisians.

Having lived in France for two years - I love em!

Mais c'est vrais que les Parisiens ne sont pas des francais.

So back to Charity giving or responses to begging - I was in Bristol the other day and a guy said to me "got any change mate"?

I am not sure the "no mate, only notes - f***ing loads of them" was quite the reply he expected!!

I agree with you about Parisians - far less tolerant than Londoners! However I've heard it said that france would be so much better without the French - perhaps that refers to Paris?

Thats quite a spiel you had prepared there :p , tell it like it is though, I'm exactly the same :) Paul

With all due respect Photodiva I know where I'd rather live - although I couldn't afford either place;)

The French are comfortable in the knowledge that they are always right - even when they are wrong:lol:

Back to what someone said about disliking foreign people doesnt make them a racist, well it does!
you don't have to like foreign people to not be a racist and in a way that it discriminative (but not really) as you're taking a group of people and treating them all the same because of their nationality!
disliking someone because there foreign makes you a racist don't even try to Denny it!

As has been pointed out, race and nationality are different. Someone can be foreign but of the same race and similarly someone can be of the same nationality but a different race. It's a common misconception.

i think this makes little difference, judging someone because of there race or nationality makes u a racist, this isnt even just my opinion the UN defines racial discrimination as:
racism is the belief that the genetic factors which constitute race, ethnicity, or nationality are a primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that ethnic differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race
mmmmmmm, black pudding :D
lol how to you spell denny then ?

Is it okay to say 'black' pudding?

as long as you dont stereotype it because its black ;)
