Changing webhosts, how to I take my domain with me?

Hi,

I purchased my domain www.anniephotographics.com through Clickpic where I currently have my website. As it and my domain are up for renewal in September I want to move to SmugMug as their service seems to better suit my needs. My question is how do I go about taking my domain name with me and using it with SmugMug instead of Clickpic?

Sorry, this is probably a totally stupid :shrug: question for those in the know but I've never had to do it before?

Hi,

What you need to do is speak to the technical support at your new provider to transfer the domain name and they should do it for you.

You will also need a backup of your site to move to the new hosting platform.

In a nut shell you copy the site to the new platform and the new providers then build new DNS zones on their hosting platform and inform the Internet registry of the transfer of domain to them.

Ok, thank you very much for taking the time to answer, most of what you said makes sense.... I'm building from scratch again with SmugMug as I am changing content and style and it it's easier for me to do it that way, so SmugMug should be able to help me with transferring the domain over? I know that somewhere in this house I have a letter from the domain people with my details are but I havent a scooby-doo where it is! Sorry I must seem terribly daft!
