Changing from Canon to Nikon

Perhaps it may help if you could post a step by step list in how you process your images just in case we can find something that is wrong with it.

I have a 50D & it is quite superb, with no problems with noise.

Is there a canon 7d thread? I searched but couldn't find it?:$

HERE

Sadly lacking in pics mind you.

I'd have no hesitation in recommending the 7D, but then again I'd have no hesitation in recommending the 50D either, so I'd definitely urge you not to go doing anything rash. The 7D is definitely better for noise than the 50D but it's not a night and day difference. The 7D is also a camera with quite a learning curve which could add to your frustration if you and it don't hit it off straight away.

I'd be more interested in seeing some examples of what you see as excessive noise Sarah?

You can't really compare this image with the one squizza posted. Her's was a full frame picture, yours is a downsized one.
Can you post a full size large picture to compare the results?

Not really sure I understand sorry? There's a fractionally crop of 14 pixels, it appears that Bibble was chopping off the edge to make the aspect ratio 3x2 (thanks for bringing my attention that feature).

Here is the jpg without the crop, again noise reduction switched off:

My point was really that I think there may be something wrong with Squizza's 50D? Other people don't seem to be complaining about that level of noise with their 50Ds?

Sarah what program are you processing the files with?

Plus have you tried noise reduction ON but on lower settings?

I'm quite happy to hold my hands up and say its me and my technique. However, I've had a 30D and a 40D and never found reason to moan. I updated to the 50D because I thought it might be better - I presumed it would be considering the price. I haven't changed the way I photograph, and have only ever moaned (constantly :D) about the results from the 50D. If it was my technique surely I would have had the same problem with the 40 and the 30 D?

I use Photoshop CS3 at home and Photoshop CS4 at uni :)

I haven't tried the noise on, because I read somewhere that it should be turned off. lol

I've only really read the first page and I think it's already pretty much a no brainer.

Go back to a 40D...

Well I just looked at the 1:1 file Sarah and that's a ridiculous amount of noise for 400 ISO. I consider 800 ISO pretty well default shooting with the 50D and 7D and don't hesitate to use 1600 ISO on either camera without seeing anything like that much noise.

I willl say though that I just reduced the file to 800 pixels and it shows a lot less noise than your reduced version. I can't help thinking the problem lies in processing somewhere. I'd really eliminate that possibility before you go spending a lot of money.

I hope it does lie in my technique somewhere along the line! I honestly do! Mainly because it would lessen the blow to my wallet :D

Try processing a file in DPP rather than ACR and compare

NR only applies in JPG

Before you decide on swapping your camera, whichever route you take. Would it be an idea to find someone off this site that will meet up for you to shoot off a few frames and compare at home.

I understand your concern, i was thinking of upgrading my 30d but not at all sure now

Well you'll certainly get the best noise performance out of DPP. I'd give that a try. ;)

Sorry, I didn't realise that yours was a full picture but you had to click to zoom in 100%.
From what I can see though, her picture had some extreme noise but it was luminance noise where in yours I can see some colour noise also?
I am not judging your camera, just stating what I see.

I think that could be the answer Sarah, both CT and Kaz (amongst others), have posted stunning images from the same camera, and to be honest if I get a poor image I work out what I have done wrong first, before blaming the kit.

Whilst I understand the urge to change to another system, and if you did would highly recommend the D300 and Nikkor optics, the cost of doing so is going to be too much.

The 50D apparently has less DR than the 40D - according to DPReview - so accurate exposure is more critical. The noise is reckoned to be better, per pixel, on the 40D, but better on the 50D if you downscale the 15MP 50D back to 10MP (thereby reducing noise by multi-pixel resampling). For the most part, the differences are very small. Most should be explained by trying to boost shadows (where the SN ratio is worse) or correcting an under exposure by boosting everything.

I've not had issues of noise in the ISO <=800 range with my E-3 (supposedly less good than the 40D or D300), which is helped a lot by the Zuiko optics being a bit brighter than their Canon/Nikon counterparts (e.g. in the 70-200 and standard kit range). This small difference is also massively helped by being able to get tack sharp pictures with the lenses wide open! Add in all lenses are stabilised (5 stops, not 2 or 3 or 4) by sensor-shift stabilisation, 11 cross-type AF and weather sealing that allows you to rinse your camera under a tap.... blah blah... etc. I've said enough...

I don't think there is a cheap answer to this, short of going back to the 40D or upgrading to the 7D. I have to say that the performance of the 300/4, as shown in the other thread from Sarah, is not very satisfactory, with or without a filter, and should also be investigated to see if there is something awry there (I don't think that is related to technique or exposure) - hopefully this isn't typical performance for the 300/4, with so much fringing and other issues.
