Change background issue

Hi, does anyone out there know how to change the background on a portrait avoiding the floaty look around the feet. I struggle with this, I have used a drop shadow without much success. I have an image where the subjects are standing on a paved path so I can't "hide" the feet in grass. Any ideas or tutorials?
