As my Sigma 170-500 is now beyond repair I am considering changing my 40D and lenses for a Canon SX1 IS. Has anyone any practical experience of this camera.

Regards
Pete

I thought about getting that camera when it first came out, but the unfavourable reviews put me off

Image-quality isn't so hot, apparently :(

In my opinion,That's crazy!Any downgrade from a DSLR to a compact/bridge is pointless and they'll always be downsides

It very much depends on the requirements of the photographer don't you think?

Seriously in my view i can't see an option where a DSLR can't be used,Modern one's are small,Especially that new lumix one,It just seems the OP is taking the easier option,I think he should either A)Save B)Downgrade to a 350D/400D and buy a 70-300 zoom lens :)

Just before you go, Pete, how good a camera is the 40D?

I've read some reviews and they seem quite positive, but I'd like to know what an owner of said camera thinks :)

It is a very good camera, but i have problems with my shoulder and with a long lens can be very heavy.

When I had shoulder issues I kept the camera and wnet down the scale in the lens range. The suggestion of a 450D + 70-300IS may be one to seriously consider - it will cost you a bit more but still a very good (and much lighter) combo.

Personally I used a fuji 9600 bridge which IMO is still one of the best handling bridge cameras out there. Power zoom is quite frankly irritating at best when you are running a large telephoto range.

Thanks for the advice.

The 70-300IS is a nice little lens, when I upgraded to a 100-400 I decided to keep the 70-300 as it is so handy and have produced some good results.
