Hey guys. I'm looking to finally upgrade my ageing 400D with a 7D, based on the RC photography being greatly helped by the 8fps burst speed.

I've been surveying for a couple of weeks to get ideas of prices around the place, but wondering what you guys think is the chance of finding one in a January sale? Is it the sort of body they may look to reduce? I'm wanting a UK model rather than an import, although I understand the savings on these can be massive.

I'd be looking to buy a Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4 OS at the same time, as again the speed will be much more use than the two 'kit' Canon offerings. Any advice on if this is a good choice at this price point?

Appreciate your comments.

Clive

No would be my guess for the cheap 7D Clive, more likely to shift older stock such as the 550D

As for the lens I would buy it where its easily exchanged if my daughters experience is anything to go by.
She bought that exact lens and it front focussed terribly, ended up getting a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC and have to say its excellent.

Get yourself to best buy asap. There might be still some left. That is your best chance.

Failing that watch ebay for unwanted pressies (didn't happen last year) and the Focus 2012 in March.

Thanks guys. Probably pretty much what I expected to hear, although its always nice to find out if I'm wrong!

Interesting what you say about the lens too. I've heard similar with other Signa lenses too, which is a shame. I currently have a cheap Tamron 55-200 for the 400D, and, although the build is obviously low end, the picture clarity is actually really rather good. Focus is terribly slow though! I have decided to pass this on with the 400D body just to make it a more worthwhile package for a beginner, but I am partly tempted to keep it in the short term. I'll have a look into the 17-50VC though!

WEX are offering a 7D for £1097 with free SX150 camera, worth about £150+

I'm on the lookout for a good deal on a 7D, but if no better offers turn up may go for this

Yeah I've clocked that. Is currently the best offer I've found, so if a quick trawl of town turns up nothing, I think I'll be ordering that one. Watching them for the last few weeks and there seems to be a small price-war with Jessops online, and there's currently 5p in it........but Jessops don't offer the freebie!

I've spent a while searching now, I can't find anything better than SRS for £1056, or WEX for £1097 with power shot 150SX.

I'm probably going to for the WEX deal myself

Yeah thanks, seen MPB. Personally I prefer to buy new, unless there s significant price difference. The WEX deal with free powershot is better value as I can sell the powershot.

Hdew is listing 7D as £955, how did you get it for £915?

Apparently so yes.
They must have put their prices up again this morning then. Mind you it did say the price was held until today.

I've just checked again, and its still showing as £915

I assumed from the start it would be a Grey import. And having asked a few questions, I'm content that there's no issue with warranty.
It's interesting that the first link you provided was very supportive of their service, and thats borne out by my friends experience as well.

I bought a 7d used that had come from hdew, the 3 yr warranty isn't transferable though you're still covered by the 12 month canon warranty so I was told on the phone when I called to ask

I bought a 7d in jan this year from Hdew for £955, they are grey import but come with a 3yr third party guarantee (through an insurance company I think!) service was excellent, ordered late on a Friday night and received my new body the following Friday. At the time it was a saving of nearly £250 so I wasn't complaining at the 5 working day turn around and having to have an adapter on the battery charger!

I got my 7d fro hdrew for 929 inc delivery in November excellent service and the warrantee is 3 years with an external company that apparently arrange the repair with any canon service centre from what I have read.

I assume all of these sub-£1k prices are for grey imports rather than genuine UK stock?

I purchased the 7D from WEX with the SX150.....no problem at all + I have a family member who wants to purchase the SX150 for £100 from me...... not a bad deal there lol

although today I have noticed they no longer offer the SX150

I went from the 350D to the 7D and haven't looked back!

I think the reviews definately trumped it above the 60d for me

Grey imports are brought in from place like HL, singapore and the states (where kit is a lot cheaper) often without paying the import duty/vat

the downsides are a) you can get stung for the import tax etc, and b) if it goes wrong it canon uk etc wont honour the warrannty without a uk sales receipt so it has to go back to the territory it was bought in

U only get 1 year warentee from canon if u buy from hdrew they are already in the uk so no tax and u get a 3 year warentee with out the return to original country

win win for me !!!
