No idea to be honest I've always bought 2 or 4Gb Extreme III's, cheap as chips these days so you might as well :)

Aggreed

Can be had for £17.99 for the 4gb ones

30mb/s write speed as well, which is going to be plenty fast enough for the 40d

Yep i use extreme 3s in my 400d no problem

There is a discussion on here somewhere that the Sandisk cards can write faster than the 400D can cope with.

I think thats about right, read somewhere on another forum that the 400D is rated at 80x transfer, where as the sandisk extreme III are 133x, the advantage though is transfer speed back to your PC through a card reader. I have 3 4GB sandisk IIIs and love them.

The number one reason for buying high speed cards, it's amazing how quickly a good 2GB card can be copied onto a PC compared to a cheap crappy one.

I've got a couple of Sandisk Extreme III cards and they're plenty fast enough for in-camera use. As has been mentioned it depends how fast you want to transfer to your PC, if you're impatient then a faster card may help, but to be honest I wouldn't worry too much, I'd just be happy buying a robust and reliable card.

The extreme III range may be able to read and write faster than the 400D, but the speed of the data transfer is handy in a card reader, sitting around for 20 minutes while 4gb of data transfers from a cheap spec card is time lost.
