CF card help

Hi chaps,

I'd be grateful for some help. I'm upgrading to a Canon 7D and haven't had any experience with CF cards.

I intend to use the camera largely for taking pictures, but obviously intend to utilise the HD video feature occasionally. I don't use burst mode often, but I think I will be more often from now.

CF cards are far more costly than SD cards, so I'm wondering what kind of capacity I might need. I use a 16GB card at the mo (only for pics) on my 450D. And also, what speeds are sufficient?

Are there any brands to avoid/worth the extra money?

I use sandisc 30mb rite speed cf 4gb and 8gb! Never had an issue with anythink.
 
Unless you are a spray and pray shooter, ultra fast cards are not required, I use a couple of Transcend 16GB 133x (20meg) cards which work fine for both stills and video.
 
It's a bit dependent on what you intend to shoot

The 16gb you have at the moment I presume they are 30mb/s at least anyway ?? which should be plenty good enough

My latest ones are Sandisk 16gb 60mb/s, as long as anything you get is bigger than 4gb you will be fine storage wise, as they fill up way too quick

Getting more smaller capacity cards, say 8 or 16gb is more sensible than getting 1 large one

One last bit of advice from me, try to avoid fleabay as there is a bigger chance you will get a forgery

Thanks for the words so far guys. I meant I was using a 16GB SD card at the moment, and the capacity was sufficient for my needs.

Any thoughts on sd to cf card adapters? They appear to be reviewed well on amazon. Point noted re fleqbay!
 
No not used an adapter either... I guess it would be ok, but CF cards are used for a reason I guess :thinking:

I believe cheaper adapters may effect the speed so may cause problems with video or long bursts, so if you can afford it, CF cards are the wAY TO GO...

I've not used an adapter, so can't recommend one, I'd have doubts in my mind over reliability, does the adapter effect the writing speed, will it effect image quality etc etc. Personaly, I'd opt for a CF card...

You'll probably end up with more than 1 CF card over time and do you not need the SD card for your 450D ?

I guess I was thinking that using an SD card with an adapter might be helpful, as then I could simply stick the SD card into my laptop without need for cables, etc. I am going to be selling on my 450D so I wouldn't have use for the SD cards any more.

Reviews on amazon appear to suggest that it slows the write speed down a small degree, but there is debate as to what parts it affects.

I'm still not sure what I should go for, perhaps I might see how I go with an adapter. Unless someone thinks it's a bad idea.
 
Decided to go for a 16GB Transcend 133x CF card for now, I'll see how that goes. Cheers for the help all!
