I know this has been asked 1000 time before but I just need to ask a couple questions, with this software http://www.piriform.com/recuva/download do I use the free version? and do I format the card first?

Brand new card, formatted it in camera first, used it this weekend, gone to take the images off of it, says I need to format the card as it's corrupt, I'm furious! :bang:

Ouch, I feel your pain. I can't help though I'm afraid but I'm sure you'll get some useful first-hand advice shortly.

Would you mind disclosing the brand and source of purchase?

Do I need to format the card first though? Laptop won't even recognise there is a card in the reader now, but my camera will, if I format have I still got a chance of recovering the data?

Do not format card

Let recover software do it's job. There's a good chance that you'll be able to recover your files.

Hopefully, you'll be successfully, but you'll then have to try and figure out what when wrong. Could be a faulty card or, more likely if you're using a cheap card reader, the card will be okay and you'll have to invest in a good reader.

If you hook the camera, up to the pc, can you view the files then?

If you camera can see the card then plug your camera into the computer and try to recover them that way. What reader are you using?

Ignore everything below unless the above doesn't work. Yep try to recover from the camera plugged in first (Never thought of that DOH!) lol.

You will have to format the card to get your pc to recognise it otherwise the only other option would be to send to a data recovery specialist which is very very expensive and really not necessary. Format once in camera, is it now recognised ?

DO NOT write anything else onto the card !!!

If it is now recognised then use a recovery program. As Ed says the sandisk one is good but I have used recuva successfully in the past.

My card reader is a Lexar one, someone here recommended it I think..

I've tried to run the software but it wont run as it says there is no card in the reader.

I'm guessing that I should scrap the card and buy sandisk in future.

I can't view the photos on my camera, that also says that the card is corrupt, but it does regognise there is a card in there which is more than the laptop will do, im guessing that plugging the camera in to the laptop wont make a difference.

ooowwww @*$% lol!!

I really need those images!!

Ok, will try plugging the camara in first and see what happens. Thanks everyone. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

I lost my images as I formatted accidently. The only way you will loose them permanently is by writing to the card as said above... So don't take any photo's whatever you do.

I believe formatting won't matter, you will still be able to retrieve the images.

The SanDisk recovery program let's you run a demo version where you can recover 25 files without a serial.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, I need to recover more like 300 files so may need to buy it if this other program doesn't work. Thanks

I have used Test Disk to successfully recover all data from a HDD that was showing the same symptoms

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

g/l

Thanks, but sadly no joy here either, I also noticed that it is reading my card as 32 mb not 16gb, I googled it and it's not looking good :(

In test disk it didn't show any partitions or file structure at all.

I don't know what to do now, do I give up and face fact that I've lost the photos, fortunately it is only one group from yesterdays meeting that I will have lost as I do each group on a different card, just in case anything like this ever happened, thank goodness for my valuable insight or it could have been a lot worse. Or is there something else that I can try?

A strongly worded e-mail will be sent to Transcend and needless to say it will be sent back for an exchange for a sandisk card instead.

Oh and just to add to my frustration....I have just been on the Transcend website, thought I would double check my card, make sure it's not a fake, well guess what?! Yep! No serial number on my card. I thought that buying from Amazon was safe as well, Grrrrrrr

Next stop Amazon customer service....

Oh dear, double-whammy disappointment. Was it from Amazon direct (rather than a company selling through Amazon)?

This is why I buy cards from amazon and not from a seller on the marketplace. Bad luck :(

Well that really strengthens your case with regard to a refund but that makes no difference to your dilemma. I feel your pain Sarah and so damned frustrating.

The fact it isn't as described (i.e. Fake) may give some credence to a compensation claim but some others on the forum may have more insight into that, I wouldnt like to comment on the possibilty.

Yeah I have hinted towards 'compensation' without actually saying the word. If anyone actually knows for sure though their advise would be very much appreciated. :)

iv'e used arax disk doctor to recover a hard drive full of photo's showing the same symptoms as your card

might be worth a try

good luck....

Hiya, Thanks but I had a look and the trial version will only recover files upto 64kb in size. Don't want to pay for the full version since other programs have been unsuccessful. Thank you anyway though.

the trial version should still show what files on the card are recoverable enticing you to buy the full version
i would have thought it would be worth running the card through the trial version to see if it can see the lost files

That was my thinking as well.

Open source stuff - http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

Won't be any good as the files are not deleted, but the card is not readable.

Incidentally I had bought the same card from Amazon before Christmas, and it was way too slow. I returned it for a refund. I have another 2 smaller Transcends (600x 8GB and 300x 4GB) and they have been totally fine for a couple years - no Amazon sourced - whether that means anything or not.
