CF card and card reader issues.

I took a photo the other day and put my CF card in my card reader and it was acting strangely.

At first, the computer was telling me it couldn't recognise the device. After a few seconds though, a "removable disk" appeared in my computer folder. Clicking on this results in at asking me to insert a disc. On inserting this card into the reader, it gives me 4 different "removable disk"s with different letters on each one.

I figured there was something wrong with the card so tried another one... same issue! But only one "removable disk". My card reader is a bit old and battered so I've just been to buy a new one, hoping it was that... but no, still the problem is there.

I'm wondering if the cards are corrupt. Although I'm thinking it's odd that both would corrupt at pretty much exactly the same time.. I was using, and uploading photos from, the first CF card just a few days ago...

I've tried it with an SD card and it works :bang:

Formatted one of the cards in camera, inserted it into the reader and got "object doesn't support this property or method"

Done nothing to the other card (the one that first gave me the issue) and, what do ya know, it's opened and there are my photos...

What's going on? Heading over to Northern Ireland tomorrow for my nephews 2nd birthday and would really rather not get home and not be able to access the photos!

hate to bump this so soon after posting but google searches aren't helping whatsoever..

I was happy that the first card now appeared to be working so, a few hours after the above post, I've taken some random snapshots on both cards and put them in the reader just to see....

Dodgy one is still dodgy and not working. The other, original dodgy one was being dodgy once again and not working.. took it out the reader and put it back in a few times and voila, it worked..

No one has any idea?

I guess your using a 15 to 1 card reader? On these each port is g8ven a letter hence the different drives. I have to say it but are you sure your clicking on the right one? And also have you tried cleaning the contacts on the card? Tried a differenc usb port or even a different pc?

The first reader was an all in one from 7dayshop, the new one is an all in one from argos - to see if it was the reader or my cards.

I've tried clicking all of them. When it's working fine, it says my cameras name in "my computer". When it's not, it gives me a "removable disk". Sometimes it gives me 5 xD All of them tell me to insert a disk when clicked.

I've tried all 4 usb ports on this computer and, sadly, it's the only one I have here to try - between now and going away, I won't have the chance to go elsewhere to try another computer.

The original dodgy one is still currently working and the other is alternating between "removable disk" and working.

I think I might be leaning towards the actual ports?

Okay so the original dodgy one (we'll call this CF A) had been working quite well. Took it in and out the card reader numerous times and it worked every single time.

Put it back in my camera, fired off a few shots, back in the card reader and... nothing. Again. So back into the camera it goes for a reformat, back out and into the card reader and it works.

So I took the other one that I just couldn't get working (call that CF B) into the camera and formatted that. Nothing.

Because I like giving myself a headache, I fired off more shots on CF A, put it in the carder and... it worked.

edit - back into the camera with CF A, fired off more shots, out and into the reader and, surprise surprise, it doesn't work.

What?

It would be good to try it with a different computer.
Does rebooting it make any difference?

I'm calling around to see who I can get to before leaving tomorrow. Rebooting doesn't change a thing :shake:

SD card works every time on the new reader too -_-

Have you tried a direct connection between camera and comp rather than using the reader?

The camera was bought 2nd hand and didn't come with the cable :shake:

I think I'm going to have to just go away, take the photos I'm going to take and hope for the best! :bonk: Maybe I'll have time over there to go and buy a new one to see if that's any different

What is the camera? Does it take sd cards? You can get those anywhere

Aha! I don't know why I haven't even checked that out... let me go try now :)

Canon 5D classic and nope, no SD card slot :shake:

Ooo pet hate lmao. Why do you guys call it a classic? Its mark 1.. :s like the vw golf mark 1 its 5d mark 1 haha.

Im sorry mate ive no other suggestions. I may order a 4th card now you have me worried lol

Jon, I owe you a pint  it worked! On both cards :) Thank you ever so much! And to everyone else for trying to help me out :)

But I'm still left wondering why? If I hadn't gone and bought the new reader, I'd have chalked it up to the old one being dodgy...

edit - Phill, I'm not sure! It's just what I've always called it  Sorry ;) haha! I'll be buying another couple when I get home :P

Excellent! I'll have a Mythos, please. At Lefteris Kafenion. On Symi. Just off Rhodes.

Where do I send the bill? :)

Um.. I'll be at the other side of the bar. Rather just off Rhodes than tomorrows destination
