ccsnet's 52 for 2010 - Week 34,25,36,37,38,39,40,41,42,43 & 44

Week 4 - Streets, this was over exposed with out a doubt even though I had lowered the EV setting in the first place and may be a good example of the limitation the camera has. That been said annoyingly CS4 and Lightroom would not let me correct the sky..... ( no doubt down to my in-experience ) although I could affect any 'coloured' area fine.

The picture its self is a street from near Lancaster Castle therefore one of the original and most history bound ones in the area having seen many trials including the Pendel witches and still a serving minor prison today.

I tried to go for a straight photo rather than FXing it but I dod sort the exposure side of it and added a warming filter after.

Hi Terran, first visit to your thread

I don't have a problem with the sky, that's the way it looks/is sometimes

I love the dappled shade effect as you are drawn into the picture but I have a problem with the amount of blank space at the bottom of the picture. A slightly more panoramic crop would work better IMHO so that most of the tarmac is removed, probably almost to the curve of the pavement on the left.

Otherwise, spot on for the theme

The tarmac isn't too out of place but would be nice to lose it. The only way you'll get the sky in there is with multiple exposures and some photoshoppery/hdr. You won't recover anything in PS or LR from this exposure if there's no detail in there to be had.

I know you've not processed this much, but be nice to see a high contrasty b&w I think.

I did think B&W and I'll run one of those up too but this week purposely avoided...

Re Tarmac... again I agree but I didnt want to loose too much of the buildings them selves which it sort of did....

Re Sky - I just wanted to add a blue tint to it but for what ever reason Adobe wouldnt play.

Terran

I think you've cropped too far, I don't mind some of the tarmac in as it's incidental. Try taking it back to just before the curve. And I prefer the colour version.

Nice pic T... Just a slight tweek with the recovery slider in LR might help a little with the highlights on the far buildings and a slight tweek with the fill light slider might help with the sign on top of the black railings (middle right hand side) :)
Cheers - Will have a peek later

Another nice shot of a timeless street. Did you knock on all the doors and ask them to move their cars? I have a street in Buckingham which would have been perfect but sadly the motors all over the pavements ruined it. Go back to the orginal crop, the tarmac didn't hurt the shot at all.

Guys - this isnt an entry but one of the rejects.... you can probably see the theme though how ever I wanted to share it with you as it was quite a view that day.... for any one who knows the area you will be able to see most of the major land marks....

Theres quite a few more in my gallery from the day....

Street - I like it & agree that it's better without the tarmac in. Better in B&W too. It's difficult in winter with the low winter sun - but you did a good job there.

Hmm... I quite like the colour, but some parts work better in B&W. I don't think the crop is quite right. It's a lovely view of an old street though. Not much you can do about that sky. What I do notice on both of them though, is an odd almost ghosting effect around all the building/sly lines. I've not a clue, but would guess a PP artefact of some sort

Your probably not wrong.... I had to jiggle with the building at the end and the white paint by changing their EV values.

Terran

@Sarah - re the lamp.... tbh I did it on purpose because I thought it would strange and an undefinable object so just moved slightly.

Looking at it again, I think that you're actually right with that

Lovely quaint street for week 4, absolutely beautiful architecture and a real atmosphere to it.
For me it's the colour image (I think the colours are nice and subdued anyway) but with the crop that you did for the B&W.
I think you've got it spot on at the bottom, I'd have taken all the tarmac out too.
I just would have liked a bit more space at the top of the image so that you weren't losing so much from the buildings on the LHS.

It's not an area that I'm familiar with, but I can see why you wanted to share that one. It really is a beautiful view. I can almost see it on a postcard as an advertising campaign for the city.

I'm glad you posted that Terran.
I was starting to wonder why I couldn't see any of your shots :cuckoo:

Hope you get your site sorted soon or find somewhere else to host your pics. Looking forward to finally seeing speed when you're sorted out.
I got no warning that one of my other sites was hogging the CPU.... apperntly they did mail me to let me know I was off line...... to the same blooming account they took off line :cuckoo:

oh - and I had to spend 24hrs battling for my data which was not uptodate as backups was one of the services I bought from them !

( PS Its Justhost.com )

Annoyingly they wont refund some of my advanced fees so I can see a small war followed by me loosing ahead...

Because of that I have have gone with a host thats properly based in the UK, who I know how to contact and although its going to cost a little more one I can trust.

In the mean time I guess Fliker will be getting some of my money soon....

Present - this weeks challenge relates to some thing I have been working on as a present. Before the new year my girls had been arguing and as a result their NDS was spilt in two. This week after the parts arrived I replaced the screen and the case and to say it was a PITA is an understatement. The main ribbon for the screen ( above ) has to fiddled with to fit plus other ribbons in the unit where a problem. This photo is basically icon of the present of doing this work and making my Daughter happy but co-incidentally the shadow I created looks a bit of a night mare image showing the flip side of the gift for me. Shot at close range in macro I'm pretty happy with the result as ribbons to me do look nice when you take the time to look at them.

Right thats me caught up just in time to find out this weeks.... I'll start looking at other 52's over the week as well.

I can see what you were aiming for with Speed, but I'm afraid it doesn't quite work for me Terran. It looks almost as if the cars are stationary.

I had to go read flickr but present makes sense. I've got an NDS here with a damaged hinge, and I've looked at trying to dismantle it, and I don't even have the right tools. I can see how fixing it would be a labour of love and defo a present for them. I also like it as a standalone shot.

Glad you're back up and running Terran

TBH I prefer your first speed shot, even if it wasn't shot for the theme. As John said, there's just not enough movement in the second one.
For the purpose of the theme, I think you could afford to crop a bit off the bottom of the first one to make the focus on the train rather than the foreground, but it does work very well.

Present : what a simply beautiful image. I love the way that the light is filtering through it, the texture in the leather background and the strange ominous shadow.
I had no idea what it was at first and had to read your Flickr - but it really does work well as a standalone image in its own right

Thanks both... re speed... limitations of the camera unfortunately - if I had the right kit I'd have left the shutter open longer to get a bit of 'movement' in the image.

Present - yep its a long and complicated story but I do like it my self.....

I've added the extra text above.... was a bit of a rush job with the problems ( still at it now lol ).

I really like the 'Present' picture - I love the simplicity of it, and there is great texture and light :)

Totally agree with Kay on this one.

I sympathise with your little project here - I've had to repair two of the blummin' things - and the screen cable is by far the worst bit :gag:

Really lacking time at the mo...... any way heres week 7.

Week 7 - People - this week I choose a subject relating to People and what is more concise than a hotel where that is is the sole subject. This one is quite famous and has a long history ( Google is your friend ) how ever after a massive re firb' which many people though would never happen this Art Deco hotel is now back open. The shot its self was not ideal and I had to mess with the perspective because where I wanted to be a car was.... you may just see that if you look carefully ( now I have given it away lol ). After that was done a soft focus was added along with a slight vignette was put on and the photo was done. More info on the hotel its self is at www.midlandmorecambe.co.uk/

Terran I like it, it's nice and crisp and clear. The angles and curves are confusing my eye, I can't decide if there's some lens distortion going on or the centre curved bit widens at the top. An interesting optical effect (probably just me eyes )... I get what you were aiming for, but it doesn't really shout people to me...

Yep.... believe me compared to how it did look thats straight lol....

TBH I will go back in the summer and re take it - I knew what I wanted but the fact I was stood in cars didnt help.

That been said its a curved building so that doesnt help

That works well Terran and you've done a good job of straightening it.
I'm a bit biased because I really like Art Deco architecture, but I think it's a good shot by anyone's standards.

The deep blue sky and the white gives almost a Mediterranean feel to the overall image and it's making me think of Summer.

I'm not quite sure that I get the people link, but if a theme's prompted you to get out and get a shot I don't think it really matters.

That's a cracking shot Terran. Really really good.

Ian.

That is a good clean shot. Has it ever been driven? :) Nicely processed and attention is well and truly drawn where it's supposed to be. Very nicely done

I know Terran wont mind me saying this but he is anally retentive when it comes to keeping his car clean :cuckoo:

Back to the shot however, this stands out as your best so far... superb

Just a bit lol although a slight bit of processing helped to make it darker how ever it is a clean especially after running the baby wipes and cloth over the bay before the shot.... didnt have the time to do it properly
