had a blockage and the sink was half full and i need a shave and dont want to burn myself if the water doesnt netralise it propley

sink is all clear now

just want to put it out of the back of my mind

Yes, it will be fine if you run a bit more water down it. I don't think Mr Muscle actually uses caustic soda, or not very much, anyway. I can't imagine that modern H&S regs would allow it!

Years ago I once cleared a drain with some powder that had all sorts of warnings on it - open windows, stand back when you pour the boiling water on it and leave the room immediately .

It made all sorts of alarming noises like alien monsters in a sci-fi film, but worked a treat .

Caustic soda can be brought from B&Q over the counter got myself some last year when I wanted to make hydrogen

Just read all the instructions.

Caustic Soda is one of most dangerous substances you can get easily.

On the skin it will not, unlike strong acids, cause very much pain - more an itching - but it will cause severe burns and needs a lot water to wash it away.

It produces shed loads of heat when mixed with water, so if you have a lot of caustic soda and a small volume of water, there is chance the resulting liquid will get close to boiling, which is just about the last thing you want.

Good for cleaning drains, but please be careful.

thanks everyone

i work with all kinds of bad stuff at work some take years to take effect and some take seconds so always carefull , gloves and goggles and that sort of stuff lol

have swelled out very well will be doing it again a few times to make sure but mind is at ease now

i remember getting a chemical not sure what it was now and if you mixed bleach it is meant to make something like mustard gas and this cant be sold in a shop it is specialist liquid no license or anything daft ( cleaning i think )

but damn does it descale toilets quick

and this had a vapour when it hit the water

it was stronger than the stuff you can buy in most diy or asda places

Casutic Soda can be bought in my shop off the shelf, yet if you want matches they're nehind the till...

most likely would have produced chlorine gas , not nice ..................

Bleach and hydrochloric acid cleaners make mustard gas, my dad ran a cleaning company for 40+ years and I worked for him for a number of years, not a very nice reaction it strips the lining of the lungs

bleach and hydrochloric acid make Chlorine gas, not mustard gas, as Paul said.

Very strong hydrochloric acid is one of the best descaling agents possible. It is likely that is what the OP was referring to. Vanisol is a commercially available toilet bowl cleaner in the US for professionals which is highly concentrated HCl. Muratic acid is a more dilute version used for cleaning masonry.

Thanks

I've used a product called Dambuster in the past. It's something like 95% sulphuric acid which is somehow inhibited to prevent it attacking metal. I spilt some on my shorts and it eat them. I feared for my love nuts that day.

I also used an acid based product called Wisemans everclear to try and clear a blocked kitchen sink. It didn't clear the blockage but turned the stainless steel sink black.

acid is not what will unblock a sink. Normally the blockages are grease, food, or hair based (more for bathrooms). Acid doesn't effectively dissolve those blockages. You want either strong base (NaOH), chlorine based bleach, or in the case of fats boiling water. Boiling water with some baking soda will do for a lot of light blockages, but only if you don't have a ton of water in the sink. It is better for slow drains.

No matter what inhibitors you put in, sulfuric and hydrochloric acids will attack metals. If you have iron or plan steel it will dissolve major pits in them. Stainless will turn black and start to pit. Aluminum will blacken. Chrome will pit and turn green from the Copper underneath (assuming chromed brass).

Thanks
Rick
