First of all, happy New year to one and all from the Archangel Mansion and I hope you all have a wonderful and peaceful new year.

Back to the thread, I am going through some old papers and have came across my dog licences for 2 Collies that I used to have...... then I thought how come we never had to licence the cat......any ideas as to why we licence dogs and not cats?

A shotgun license usually covers cats:cool:;)

We don't licence dogs. That stopped in 1987.

I have just discovered this on the web....I had the dogs back in northern Ireland, which still licence dogs.

Off subject - it used to be necessary to have a licence for a radio and a separate one was needed if you had a car radio. That stopped in 1971. The cost was £1 and 5 shillings (£1.25). That is equivalent to about £40 today !!

Can't remember the exact wording, but it's basically because you never actually 'own' a cat as such, it stays with you of it's own free will, and in law was considered a 'wild' [or possibly a better descriptive word is 'free'] animal.

ETA: OK, just found something [and to correct myself a little] cats are and have been a long time considered domestic animals and protected as such against cruelty, etc, obviously but in terms of 'controlling' them and ergo licensing...well, as per my comment above, they generally hang around of their own free will and not because they have been trained to do so, or indeed can be 'trained' in the traditional sense we think of with dogs, making such licensing an almost impossible task and I guess [haven't found anything to say otherwise] considered to be pretty unworkable as legislation.

My understanding is that dogs have owners and cats have servants:)

Along the same lines. Get a dog to love you and a cat to ignore you.

Or, Many years ago, the ancient Egyptians worshipped cats as Gods,
Cat's have never forgotten this fact ;)

My two cats are very keen gardeners! Their motto is "You plant them we dig them up!"

I think they're also still gloating over the fact that whilst they were revered....upon a person's death, their dogs would be killed and interred with them to guard the body. Bummer :(

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest ;)

UK law. the dog is a domesticated animal. a cat is a wild animal. examples are that if you collide with a dog while driving you should report the incident. if you colide with a cat, no obligation.

your dog and yourself could be held liable for issues such as nuisance aggression or worrying livestock especially sheep.

any nusiance issues regarding cats - well, they are wild animals so no comeback
