Just handed over custody of another poor unfortunate animal to the RSPCA.
Little tabby and white cat got hit by a Zafira out on the road and dragged herself away with no use of her back legs. One of the saddest sights I've ever seen. We caught her and settled her into a large box on a big warm fleece and kept her warm in front of the fire, and I went out to do the door-knocking routine. Had one lady wonder if it were hers, but when she came she said no....hers is apparently much bigger.
Anyway the RSPCS inspector scanner her, and she is chipped to hopefully they can trace her owners. There was also a pain reaction from the cat when her paws or tail were squeezed so it may be that her spine is either bruised or dislocated rather than broken.
Just seems like one animal drama after another! Just could leave the poor little girl dragging herself along the road like that. :shake:

Well done for rescuing her. Hopefully she will recover and be reunited with her family soon :).
 
Good on you! You will have made a family very happy and no doubt, stopped a lot more suffering.
 
Poor thing Ruth, the Cat not you ;) We lost one a few years back with the same kind of injury. We were in the kitchen one morning when she dragged herself through the catflap. From the road to the house was about 50yrds away she must have been really determined,no movement or feeling along her back or back legs, there was only one option in the end :(

I seriously still suspect that this will be the ultimate outcome for this little kitty. I know I lost my dog just a short time ago, but seeing this little girl drag herself along the cold, snowy road...her lifeless little rear legs of no use whatsoever was heartbreaking, and I'm not even a cat person! She was very afraid, but settled well in her box in front of the fire...all snuggled in a soft fleece. W had a good chat. Carp...I need to learn to not give a sh**.
 
Well done Viv. Many years ago our black cat was clipped, the driver did stop and knocked on a door a few houses away but they didn't recognize the description as ours. We came home from work after a late shift to hear her crying under the carport. She came to the front door but one of her rear legs wasnt working properly. We made her comfortable and took her to the vets first thing in the morning. Luckily it was only damage to the socket and the vet managed to rebuild it and within a few months she was like new. I always cringe when I see a cat or lone dog near a road.

Good on you Ruth, me and the missus do get very upset when our pets get injured or are ill. Our cat is an indoor one, and does not go outside apart from the veranda. While our dog only goes out with us and never let out alone. But it's good to know there are folk out there, who will take the time to stop and help an injured animal.

I do hope something can be done for the cat.
 
Awww, speaking as an owner of a black cat, I felt that one.

Sadly, I came across a similar thing only a couple of weeks ago when I noticed something white and furry lying in a gutter on the side of a road just around the corner from my house, but unfortunately the poor mite was dead after a hit and run incidence and it wasn't at all a pretty sight. So, I went home, grabbed a blanket and carefully wrapped him/her up and took it to the vets for ID and cremation. There was no chip and despite a local-facebook style campaign, we never did find out who was the owner.
But like I said, I couldn't just ignore it and leave the poor thing lying there in a cold and wet gutter.
 
And the kitty survives!
Just got a call from the RSPCA inspector to say that a) the owners have been traced (not far from where we are), and b) it seems her paralysis is caused by a displaced vertebra which is pressing on her spinal cord. The owners are going to pay for surgery to correct. So it's "yeay" all round. :banana:

Puss will probably be a bit stiff for a while but has been re-united with his/her staff who will (hopefully) cater to his/her every whim until he/she is fighting fit again.

Shortly before Mum and Dad rescued our Maisie, she had a leg (thigh) badly broken but the CPL pinned it before putting her on the rescue line. Nobody will ever know how it got broken but we rather suspect that she got under somebody's feet - still one of her little habits. Not long after Dad downsized, she came crawling through his cat-flap dragging the other rear leg - thgis time, she had the grazes etc that generally accompany H&Rs. A few weeks in a cage and she was back on all 4 and jumping down from the top of a 6' fridge/freezer, much to Dad's horror! Fortunately, her back hasn't been damaged though and she seems to have learned from her last accident - she's very wary of cars when she encounters them (which is fortunately rare - we live in a cul-de-sac so very little traffic passes and it's almost all residents who drive sensibly in the close) and we only let her out at the back (although she does get to the front...).

It might have been a very different out come if you hadn't rescued her. Let's hope the owners keep her inside in the future.
 
Nod, we live in a cul-de-sac too, and I saw who hit her, but I honestly don't think they saw her as she darted out from beneath another car. The RSPCA bod asked if it was OK to pass my number on to the owners as they have asked for it. Amongst other things, it's made my day :D
 
I was dreading clicking on this for an update but I am so glad I did!

I wish all owners would microchip their cats for exactly this reason.

IIRC, all CPL rescues get chipped before rehoming - that's one of the things the donation "forever home" owners make covers.

Ruth, I know you're more a doggy girl than a cat woman but have you considered a change?

Nooooooo. Cute as they can be, cats live too much according to thier own plans and agendas for me :lol:
Give me a big soppy mutt any day of the week.
Him indoors is going on holiday on the 9th....I am not. I'm just taking a week off work.
He may get a surprise when he gets home (although I think I'd be in Biiiiiig trouble :lol: )

Many years ago I worked for a vet part time [back then I had aspirations to be one, but my failure to ever grasp the a full understanding of physics O level, well at least half of it anyway, put paid to that idea] Friends of my fathers lived about half a mile from the surgery and appeared one night just as we were finishing with a pure white cat that had been hit by a car. Her hips were smashed to pieces and the chances of recovery were almost zero. However Wendy was not a woman to let 99.5% chances get in the way and so began a long and unsure road to recovery. However, recover the cat did, to absolute full mobility with just a little bit of early morning stiffness. Wendy spent many days & weeks trying to find the owners, this was in the days before chipping, but to no avail and footed the entire veterinary bill herself. The cat had started coming in and out of the garden through the catflap and seemed to perfectly at home. Then, about a year after the accident, she just went out one day and never came back. Cue all the usual searches, etc, nothing. I did ask Wendy if she regretted doing what she did, but no, and said she would do it all over again. ;)

Great news, all us pet owners and probably most none pet owners love a happy ending like this.

A surprise eh while hubby is away? I know the feeling. Many years ago when I was on nights a chat on the phone with my wife she asked the question "what would we call a ginger kitten if we had one?":suspect:

Isn't she? You don't really get an idea from her size there. She's not a kitten, but she's very small.
 
She looks like she's recovering well. She is similar to our 2 cats.

Truth be told I'm pretty damned chuffed. When it happened I must admit I didn't fancy her chances. I'm neither a cat lover nor a cat expert, but even I understand that when a poor little creature is slinking away in the freezing cold....dragging her useless little back legs behind her, then the odds have got to be poor.

She is still at the vets as they are trying to keep her as immobile as possible to allow the re-alignment surgery the best chance of full success, but all being well she should go home some point in the next few days. Must be costing her owners a fortune!

Incidentally (and Daryll wil like this), her name is Betty Boo :lol:
 
Thanks for this, Ruth. I know you're not a cat lover, and I'm not very fond of dogs, but I'd do the same for an injured one. No animal should be left to suffer, frightened and in pain.
