I recently bought an FZ-82 for a specific purpose, whilst trying it out, thought I would make some casual comparisons between it and the TZ-60, G80 and G9.

Totally subjective, just my view from trying them together.

The first thing that struck me was the noise.

I don’t know why I expected less, obviously it was not a thinking expectation :)

It is actually fairly good in good light, as long as the whole frame is looked at.

It is as far as I can see (in terms of noise) exactly the same as the TZ60.

Compared to the G80, it is noisier, but it has an advantage over the G80 if you have to crop the G80 shot to get the same in the frame as the FZ82 at full zoom.

This advantage seems to be soon lost in less than ideal light though, the G80 soon becomes better.

The digital and extended zooms on the FZ 82 are really not worth having, unless the light is extremely good, or you have to have the shot regardless. The same goes for the TZ60.

One somewhat disappointing find on the FZ82 is that it does not have an “artificial horizon” which I have come to use a lot on Lumix cameras.

The lens is good, at all lengths, can’t make up my mind which is better, the FZ82 or TZ60.

Like the TZ60, the aperture range is very limited.

Where it really scores above the TZ60 is its optical zoom of 1200mm vs 720mm (35mm eq) This gives a very worthwhile improvement in the image when you have to crop the TZ60’s image more to get the same end result.

The wide end of the zoom is better than the TZ60, 20mm vs the TZ60’s 24, though I think many places where that would be useful, the smaller camera might be more useful.

It is also very comfortable to use, customising the buttons, it can be almost the same as using the M43 Lumix cameras.

It is certainly a worthwhile alternative to an M43 where convenience and less things to carry is needed. (If I knew the light was going to be poor, I think I would use an M43 though)

A X1 close up lens with the lens at 1200mm allows you to fill the frame with a bee, from 2’ away, and the lens itself at 1200mm will focus down to about 5’, which is very handy.

I did do a couple of comparisons with the G9, but stopped as there really was nowhere it was going to compare, except when looking at the whole frame with no crop, under ideal light, and looking on a computer screen, then the differences between all of them don’t really show up.

They all take good pictures under the right conditions, and it is certainly going to be good for what I bought it.

I think this shows the difference in noise, both the same settings,

The same trend is seen in different scenes

What's optical quality like with a 20-1200 zoom? I can't imagine it's great - using the phone to read this means I can't tell what the images you posted are like.

The optical quality is quite good, certainly does not spoil anything and not the "weak link"

These will give an idea of the lens at 1200mm

This is the full frame at 1200mm. The lamp post is 470' from the camera, and the yield sign is about 420' from the camera, the parking restriction sign you can just see part of on the right of the picture is about 500' from the camera.

This is a crop of the signs on the lamp post, the black numbers are about 1" high.
As you can see, it is the noise that is problem, not the lens

The images have not been processed.

Pretty good optically :)

I've found the FZ82 to be a useful walking around camera, able to cover almost any subject acceptably.

I hope you don't mind me posting some shots from mine...

I like those :)

It does very well, I have always been very happy with the TZ series, and the FZ82 adds a good quality long lens, plus the nice body, very pleased with it.

The purpose I bought it for will not involve much low light or overcast days, and the reach will give me what I missed before, without having to use a dSLR or mirrorless.

The noise, as usual, is not so noticeable until you crop fairly heavily, and less of that is needed with the long lens.

It also works very well with a filter mount close up lens.

This is my other "standard" test.

The windows are 560m away. The roof above the windows is another 52m past the windows.

Both pictures were cropped to two specific points (top left on a chimney joint and bottom right on a brick joint) to see which the difference on the same final image.
There are more pixels in the FZ82 image.

For comparison, this is the G9 with the 100-400 at 400

You mention the Panasonic TZ-60. I bought one a long time ago but found I still had it when rummaging through a draw! Great that it shoots RAW and has a small viewfinder (my Olympus TG-6 Tough doesn't!) but how do I convert and adjust its RAW image files please?

I use Capture One 22 on a Mac desktop and don't have Photoshop any more. I also have ON1 RAW 2022, Luminar AI and Affinity installed.

Thanks for any advice.

Affinity will do it very well and easily.
I also use RawTherapee, Can do a better job, but takes longer.

Luminar AI is not very good, and as slow as slow can be compared to the others.

..... Cheers Steve!

I'll give it a go in Affinity Photo - I use Affinity Publisher a lot (my Adobe InDesign replacement) and have Affinity Photo installed but haven't used it yet.

I only use Luminar AI as a plug-in for finishing effects such as enhancing a sky for example or vignetting (which it is brilliant at). I primarily shoot on Olympus OM System PRO and exclusively RAW.

Anything I shoot on my TZ-60 will be snaps rather than photos to develop into pictures to keep. I don't get on physically with phone cameras! They either jump out of my hand or photograph my hand!
