O.k so my old banger gave up and I've brought a new old banger from 2001 ( Hyundai Amica 1000cc ) In keeping with it's age it has a casstte tape player, I thought about pulling it out and fitting something more modern and then thought no ! why throw out a working item ! So my plan is to get hold of an old cassette recorder and record podcasts onto cassette so I can play them on my way to work. My question is in order to transfer them onto tape I will need to make up a lead to go from the stereo output of my laptop to the cassette recorder but will the cassette recorder record mono or stereo and if I go from stereo to mono will I lose a lot of the recording ? It's been sometime since I used a cassette recorder !

Thanks all

If you have to correct lead, the cassette will record in stereo.

Thanks Mark ,I wasn't sure if cassettes were in stereo or not

Why not just get one of these?

IOMAX Car Cassette Adapter with Retractable Cable: AmazonSmile: Electronics

Then you can just jack your phone into the cassette player and listen to podcasts straight from Spotify. It's like a time machine connecting a turn of the century Hyundai to the future :)
For under a fiver that would be my first choice, even if it's total garbage you're not greatly out of pocket, but it may not fill that diy itch :ROFLMAO:

By coincidence I'm currently doing the reverse process

Assuming your podcasts are already on a modern device, would something like this be suitable

Thanks for all the replies everyone, much appreciated. My Samsung phone decided to die a month or so ago so I had to revert to an old phone (probably as old as the car !) I have really appreciated having the basic phone for a few reasons one the battery will last for two weeks, two no one contacts me unless they really want me ie: no silly videos or general junk and the thing has out lasted at least 5 smart phones that I have had plus it's truly small ( about as big as a box of Swan Vesta match's). I like old tech and also don't like to see a fully working device/item sent up our local incinerator. Hence the reason for putting it on tape from the PC ( also quite old running Linux) I did have a DAB/MP3 /USB Stereo in my previous car but one day I found that the face had vanished , I can only think that either me a passenger or my dogs had somehow dragged it out of the vehicle with out knowing. I must add I do have a more modern car but don't really like it as it's not really use able in the abusive way I tend to use vehicles muddy dogs, fishermen, mountain bikers, Canoeists , fire wood collecting +++. So really it's a little used spare. I did use one of those tape converters for a while for the same purpose when I was a HGV driver with one of the little MP3 players that were common. I must admit to being a deliberate Luddite some times and thought I must be the only Pearson in the world that is is trying to go Digital to analogue but after doing a little research it seems much more common than I thought !
