I'm sure some of you are aware of this but I've found cash generators pretty decent in terms of bargains. Amongst their collection of crappy digital compacts theres always a gem hiding, just been in my local one and saw a nikon fg with the 50mm 1.8 for 60 quid. Would have got it if i wasnt saving all my pennies for my US trip. So next time you're walking past, avoid the chavs trying to nick a stereo and have a gander!

P.S. I dont work for cash generators.. before anyone accuses me of doing their advertising for them.

Always worth a look, though I've never found any bargains personally. The FG sounds like a good price (though I paid £20 for mine and the E series 50mm lens can often be had for £30 ish). I suspect they have a pretty good idea of the value of things.

I'm kinda with what he said. Sometimes my local shop has "let's get a few sales going" pricing here and there but they need looking for.

I picked up an EOS 1N last year. Found the manager to open the cupboard and let me handle it, provide my own batteries and lens to put on a show of a convincing test then haggled her straight down by about 30% for cash now on the counter. Result.

I do sometimes wonder if I'm buying knock-offs but stuff comes with a receipt and in the case of cameras, a refund warranty.

I saw a Canon 75-300 (non usm) lens last week in South Shields reduced to £120.00 then came home and saw it was £115.00 new, pretty adventurous pricing I think or maybe the prices are always this high.

Saw a CZJ 35mm Flektogon in my local one a while back, it was up at £149... I had a look at it, it was full of fungus and the aperture didn't work... i mentioned it to them - they didn't seem to care - probably thought I was trying to haggle.

About 2 years ago there was a Canon FDn 50mm f1.8 for a wierd price of £2.97 HUh! in the window..of course I bought it and probably the shop owner thought it was broken as the iris wasn't working, well it doesn't off the camera.

Cash generators use ebay for the pricing of their goods, they check for recently sold items and prices are based on this, the procedures for checking items are in good working order are loose at best, i would suspect that on most lenses there is no testing at all unless an employee has some experience with photography, most lenses on there web site don't even mention what brand of camera they fit, because they don't know or don't realise this might be important.

Then there is always the chance of the items being stolen, i would say the owners do care (most stores are franchises) about buying stolen goods but not enough to have systems in place to prevent this, some do but very few, i recently bought a lens off ebay that turned out to be stolen and it caused me a fair few problems, one of which was getting the police to take the lens off me !?, i eventually got my money back from paypal but the seller couldn't care less he had sold a stolen item, nothing to do with cash generators as such but my point is no one wants to buy stolen goods and have the problems associated with it.

I should also mention that their refund policy is to not give cash refunds but store credit, I'd suggest you enquire at the point of sale (or before, with the manager) to clarify this.
