I have seen a Canon 100-400mm for £790 in my local Cash Converters. It looks in very good condition but it is sold without a hood or carry case.
The story is that someone bought it with a 5D but only wanted the camera body not the 100-400. I don't know what to make of it, but I have to say I'm tempted.

Anyone else any experience of dealing with Cash Converters?

My mate had all his fishing tackle nicked it was found in cash convertors.
say no more.

Beware, you will never get your money back if anything goes wrong.

Voucher to spend in store refund the norm with cc.

Sounds dodgy to me the sort of tog that buys a 100-400 to start with has the hood and case. It certainly wouldn't have been part of a kit, and what tog would take it in to Cash Convertors to get money in the first place as they wouldn't give a fraction of what they could get on any tog forum. I reckon it's hot.

I am inclined to agree with you. While it seems a good deal (and very well might be) something just don't feel right about it.

If you were going to buy a 5D and 100-400 you would very likely know how much the 100-400 is worth and also where would be best to sell it (ie not CC).

No hood, case box or manual smacks a bit of a quick grab from a broken into house. Maybe it was attached to the body? :shake:

They've gone on here for 870'ish with hood and case. The hood will set you back £30-40. If you want the case then that's another outlay so the price seems pretty normal really.
Never used Cash Convertors but find it hard to believe they're a fence.

you can get this one for £800 with hood and case
I am soooooooo tempted with that. Only thing is I need to ask my folks if they would loan the cash until I get a refund on the one I bought off ebay. They are asleep so I won't be able to sort it until the morning. :bang:

Confused now:thinking: Have you already bought a lens??

Yea. I got one off ebay that was very much not as described and I have a 99% certain case for a refund through paypal.

I am looking for a replacement. Only problem is all my cash is tied up in the dodgy one I got.

Cash converters is usually a bit of a rip off/con TBH. Up here they won't buy anything from you unless you provide reciepts. Anyway, hubby has been looking in there for years and years, looking for "that little gem" - he found his gem this year - another bloody amp.... honestly, no need for 3 I'm sure! - Still, it means that it's less of a challenge to convince him I really need a (*item*) for photography

Why not ring your local plod and ask if theres any "missing" cameras/lens that match that one first. Just because it's an odd cobination doesn't make it stolen, the tog might have sold off other bits first to mates or might just have flogged stuff he doesn't use.
That said it's not uncommon for villians to use places like CC to get rid of stuff.

Hi I saw this lens yesterday. Seems to have been looked after to me, I don't now have a Canon but I think if I had I would have taken my camera, given the lens a good trial and bought it. You can't ignore all goods in Cash Converters because it my be stolen. they would never sell anything. Surely they should do all they can to ensure stuff they buy is Kosher!

You would think so but sadly it is not always the case.

When I lived down in Kent my local CC was well know as a place where crooks could get cash for stolen goods, so much so that the manager was eventually prosecuted for handling stolen goods and the shop closed down.

I was burgled once and had a number of electrical items stolen, 2 TV's, lap top, stereo etc. They were all found 4 days later in CC - apparently the guy who burgled my place just walked in with all the items and got his cash, no questions were asked of him and obviously he had no receipts to prove that he owned any of the goods

Ask Cash Converters for the serial number before you proceed with the purchase, if there's nothing dodgy about it they should oblige. You can then check with the police to see if it's a stolen/lost item. I wouldn't purchase kit from Cash Generators, it's generally overpriced or hot, or both.

Nigel.

I've decided to go with this one.

The CC one just left too much of a nagging doubt in my mind. Also I would have had to pay another £30-40 at least to get a hood and case.

The guy I spoke to yesterday in the shop said the 100-400 normally retails about £2500. When it was obvious I knew something about these lenses he said "well maybe £1500 second hand". Hmmm £2500 for a new 100-400! I think he was trying to pull the wool with that. :naughty:

Dunno if they'd do anything, but you could try contacting Canon Professional Services with the serial No. If it's been registered they may be able to contact the previous owner.

Anybody can register their gear with CPS - you don't have to qualify for membership. This is the sort of situation where it may help.

Other than asking for ID of the seller what else can they do  Ok i'm interested, leave it here while I contact the police to see if it's been stolen, i'm sure the police would soon get fed up with phone calls from cash converters every time someone bought something in to sell.

It's hard to believe but there are people that don't use the internet so it may be straight, you certainly wouldn't be prosecuted for buying something from a shop if it did turn out to be stolen, pay with a credit card and you're covered as it's over £100

I've found my local Cash Converters to be pretty good for older lenses.
Just picked up 2 M42 lenses, 35mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.8 @ £5 for the pair. Both in perfect order.

However, they do ask ridiculously high prices for newer gear. Eg, Canon D30 with 18-55 lens @£399.99 and a well used 450D body only @ £469.99

The lens I was going to buy off Mark on here fell through.

Went down to CC today and they had receipts etc so I was pretty happy. They had a further 10% off all things in the store so I ended up paying just £720!! I didn't get chance to test it but they said they would take it back if it wasn't right.

If it's any peace of mind you could buy a 5d & 24-105 + 100-400 retail kit as well as (iirc) a 5d & 24-70 + 580EX kit a while back so the story in the OP may be perfectly feasable..
