got a chance to go to silverstone in less than 2 weeks, i own a canon 30D, 18-55 kit lens and a canon 100-300 f4.5-5.6 usm i have never shot any cars before whether stationery or moving, any tips for me?.
Hardest part will be finding a good location at Silverstone bcause of the very high fenses and wide run off areas. I'm assuming you're after some actions shots. Easy enough straight on but panning is always a bit harder. You don;t want a really fast shutter speed or else you'll lose your blurred background. You might find it easy to work in MF and focus on the part of the track where you want to take the picture. Your lens isn't super fast at focusing in AI servo. Follow the car in your viewfinder then when ready click then follow through a bit more. Practice makes perfect in getting them sharp with a nice blurred background but at least you can see straight away.
Best areas that are easy to get to are hight up the concrete at Copse (end of straight) and also around nr the Brooklands building at the Luffield complex. If you're lucky you might get a few off of the bridge before Luffield but normally you get moved on. I'm assuming the "internationl" circuit will be used so you can sometimes go to the back of the infield and watch pics as thhey go through there.
There's plenty of opportunity there just make the most of it.
Best place for a beginner with moderate kit is the luffield section just before the start finish line. You can shoot over the fence if you stand at the back of the terraces, or sometimes you can get right up to the fence (depends how many officials are watching) and shoot over / through it.
AI Servo
shutter priority, start at around 1/320 for a front 3/4 and experiment from there.
My advice would be to get positioned where, shooting oncoming cars, you'll have a good background that will make the cars stand out and not detract fromt he subject matter. Not that I'm a car photographer or anything...
