Cars and Smog !

I'm willing to bet there were far far fewer vehicles on the road then than there is now. As others have mentioned coal fires will have been the main cause of that smog, not traffic.
does that really matter ,when the air you should breathe is killing you the end result is the same your on borrowed time .man is killing the planet be it extinction of animal types ,or plundering the resources of the planet .the next big war will no doubt not be over oil or land or power it will be over water thats a certainty thats getting nearer every day

Like I said, not measuring in real world conditions. There is only so much energy from a litre of fuel, the rest is waste however you formulate the calculation.
Feel free to come up with a method of real world conditions for all car manufacturers to measure fuel economy or emissions so their results are repeatable and comparable.
Whilst there may be a limit to how much power can be extracted from a litre or fuel, there are ways and means to make sure that as much as possible is extracted from that litre and to stop wasting energy/fuel when you don't need to.

It matters because the subject is about cars and smog, the instance of smog I quoted was not down to cars. They had smog in London when the only mode of transport involved riding a horse or being pulled along by them.

errrr plenty of cars and lorries about in the 50's ,lets get this right smog and or fog only gathers in low lying areas ,valleys or estuaries .you can usually drive out of it and look down on it from hill top or even a high building .its more to do with where we built our cities out of laziness that anything else ,something in fact the ancients seemed to understand but was lost in translation .i.e rome was built on seven hills originally as was athens etc by building next to rivers we have caused our own problems

I've been burning peat tonight. Not the commercial pressed blocks you see at the petrol station but proper cut peats. You get a lovely smell from the fire the brown smoke from the chimney was really thick.

The first settlement in the London dates back to 43AD and was also built by the Romans (Londinium), so it was them that has caused the problems for us it's by no means a recent thing.
