Hi

just out of interest, Ive already accepted a quote now, although I thought it was quite high.

Asked a local firm/guy to quote to :
replace the latch in the bathroom door from one with just the curved springy bit, with a privacy latch which has the normal springy bit which turns with the handle and also has a recatangular bit that locks the door by turning a small knob from the bathroom side door handle. I already have the handles to go with this.
On the double wood garage doors, put two fairly sturdy bolts on the "dead" door, one at top and one bottom to secure the door, drilling into frame at top and concrete at bottom to make recess for the bolt heads. Replace the padlock clasp I currently have with a proper sash lock that can be locked with a key and also has a latch for opening and closing door normally when working in garden.
Chippy will supply bolts and sash lock for this, I have to provide a handle.
Now I would have thought this was easily less than a days work.
Quote is for £285 where I thought maybe £140 - £160 would be reasonable.

Have I lost the plot?

Cheers all.

If it is a firm rather than a one man band £285 is reasonable to cover a man > van > materials > overheads (NI, Employers Contribution, Holidays, Pension Et. normally add around 26% to costs) + profit as they cant do it for nothing, if it was a one man band circa £200 would be reasonable around here £150 - £175 labour, £40 materials

Can you not do this yourself?

I am having 2 doors hung - pine and are blanks I have bought the door packs and doors - chippy will fit hinges, hand doors and remove old ones, fit handles and twist lock mechanisms and door reces hardware, price for both - £90.00 thats the price around here for door hanging and fitting, internal doors that is...I will then remove them and sand and stain / wax whatever and replace

Your quote seems very high to me....

Probably half a days work so possibly the upper end of the scale but not unreasonable.
Re. The one man band v firm. The one man band still has to allow for tax, NI, TPL insurance, "holiday pay", his own pension scheme and so on. (And his van :-) )

A one man band around here would not be paying NI and Tax on the money put in his back pocket :p

He's in the yellow pages as just his name and his mrs helps out on the phone and emails quotes out. I think quote is high but I'll go with him this time. If he ever gets round to responding to my accpetance of the quote that is.
Cheers all

my tame joiner who i use a lot is a bout 180 a day plus materials.
however i own 4 houses and currently renovating another so he gets alot of business

Depending on quality of items he's supplying, then it does to me sound possibly on high side.

If you feel it's high by about £100, why have you accepted the quote ?

Could be worth asking for a breakdown of costs - I know my mate who's a joiner is happy to do so...

Because it takes weeks for a chippy to come round and estimate and the jobs been dragging on so long I just want it done now.

Yes I can appreciate that - is it not something you could undertake yourself ?

I have found a local joiner on Facebook. There are local pages here and you get reviews as well.
I had 3 people come round for pricing up some decking, framework and planters. The quotes ranged from £600-£1800. I ended up giving the work to a chap who cane in time, had knowledge of the job, offered advice and in the end did a bl00dy good job. He was paid £1050

Since then he's got some more work from me and now my neighbours.
