Daily Carol's 365 from 12th December 2012 - A Year of Happiness

Thanks Matt :)

Proposed Plan for today - get up , go town, call in at the Art Gallery for some shots there, Go and find the Street Art and get some shots of them.

Actual Plan for today - Get up, see the rain, change mind :(

So I have gone through various ideas and then remembered the Oil on Water shots and thought Id give it a go ..... Blue paper under a clear bowl, Water with some oil, Shutter speed right down, aperture right up, Manual (definitely working with this a lot more than auto now :D ) Take a few shots hmmmmm...... lets get some movement and see what happens so there I was stirring it quickly with a spoon and then trying to capture the movement (if possible)....... and these are three of the end result :) Not the best but it passed a boring, rainy morning and mid afternoon :D

Not bad Carol, look a little under exposed, but something to come back to.

Looks like you had fun, Carol, and experimenting with things I haven't even had the courage to try yet! I am building a list, though, including that light painting stuff, freezing my backside of on abridge over a motorway for those lights and a bit of sticking food dye in a glass of water!:lol:

I love the shade of blue you have in these and, from your description, I assume it is your first go? If so, you did a fine job of it! :)

Im so far behind with everyone's threads due to a hectic few days! Your last 3 are very nice Carol, I do like the gulls the way they are and the flower is gorgeous.

carol... you didn't leave your camera in your jeans pocket again and left it in the spin cycle ..now did you???

Hey Carol, it's Mr Catchup here ;)...

Nicely lit shot of the dancing shoes, got it spot on . Love the baby shots too, maybe the lighting just a little bit harsh, but still gorgeous shots :).

Lovely shots of the robin, great birds to capture as they always seem oblivious to humans around them.

Really like your bubbles shot, for a first attempt it's really really good :).

The colouring in the tiles shot is really nice, although needs a bit of straightening :), and loving the DOF in the cakes shot, they look scrumptious.

The gulls shot is a little cracker, and great dof, love it.

Today's shot not bad for a first attempt, a little underexposed, and I prefer the 2 smaller shots if I'm being honest, but definitely one to revisit

Thanks Sarah Think they were over exposed to start with and then I clicked the exposure button a bit too far on the edit. I have all the originals though so can try them again

Thanks Sam Yes its a first try I intend to try the light painting and the standing on a bridge (though still unsure of that one at the minute- maybe better weather will spur me on)

Like the shot bottom left Carol, but not keen on the spinning one.

Thanks Sarah The spinning one just happened and I thought Id just carry on doing some more and see what everyone thought

Kev.... my camera is a tad too big to be in my jeans pocket ..... or are you insinuating the my jeans may be large enough :suspect: lol

Thanks Simon for all the comments Seems the spinning one isnt a favourite but it was worth a try - I will be trying again another day and maybe get all the settings right - was just an experiment today - still learning about the settings and how they work together at the minute so I like to try things out just to see what they do :)

Hi Carol great attempt at water! If you are shooting in a bowl or something put the camera on a tripos and manual focus - float a bit of paper or something on the water focus on that and they will be pin sharp then play about with your apertures some times a wider aperture for the oil on water will give you quite different results! ;)

Thanks Ferj :) will try that one next time I do them :)

Thanks Toni :)

Thanks Jake :) I am going to re do them when I have a day off and have more time :)

Thanks Vince :)

The Geese have arrived at the lake today and I tried to get some decent shots of them even with the sun being low and very bright and they kept paddling away from me
But got this one just as one of them was taking off - again not the best but learning how to use this manual mode a bit better

For shots like todays Carol, I wouldnt use manual mode. Would it not be easier to use shutter priority, pick your shutter speed and let the camera sort out aperature and iso? You have done well with it though.

Catching up here....had a good browse through...
52 stand out for me....
51 I like the composition but is a little over-exposed I feel...

Thanks Jeff :) 51 was a little over exposed I think but I didnt have a chance to edit it before I had to go to work

Loving yesterdays very nice and today's work well too :D is that what we would call a crash landing  big splash

Thanks Matt :) Never seen or heard such an enormous splash from a bird

Thanks Phil :) Never even thought of doing that ... will try it next time :)

I like today's very much - it's a nightmare when the light doesn't work your way and those pesky birds just don't understand that they need to do the same again for you to get it perfect!!!

Both are great catches, Carol! :)

Thanks Sam :) I am trying not to shoot in auto at all and keep forgetting about some of the other modes on the camera :) Will have to start sitting there for a while and figuring it out before I try to do a shot .... but the pesky birds just wont play properly - the resident ones are great and wait for me to get the bread out (including the Heron) but the new ones are the problem

Agree with Phil ;) When it's action shots go with TV mode, then you control the blur or not, when it's arty farty stuff ;) AV and then you are in control of the DOF much easier to sort out :)

But, I do like splash down

Love that second one Carol :) When you're learning manual, it's quite easy to fall into trying to take EVERYTHING in manual but there are times and places for TV and AV :D

Thanks Sarah :) I will remember that one - so used to auto that I forget what everyting else is for but have to admit since I joined this forum I have become a lot braver and am trying everything that always scared me before :)

Thanks Toni :) always learning and with people like you and everyone else here I am learning even quicker than I did before :D

Loving those geese carol... Super!

You look like you had loads of fun with the water!! .... Can't wait to see more

Thanks Trace :)

I'm having a bit of a rough day today :( Couldnt sleep last night as I have a Frozen Left Shoulder :( Not good as I cant lift anything and 6 hours of putting stock out hasn't helped much (Thanks to the lazy devils that were on yesterday afternoon :annoyed: )
Anyway couldnt hold the camera for long so settled for another bird shot Im afraid .... Mr Blackbird this time .... it was raining and you can see it on his feathers and he looked at the window as though he was asking for an umbrella or something

Not sure a canon would do that....:cuckoo: it would certainly choose an aperture but I think you still have to set the iso yourself....unless her camera has an auto iso option. I would worry this might however choose something higher than would be necessary.....

I agree though that Tv mode might have been the better mode to choose for the ducks landing.

Thanks Kenny and to be honest Im not sure if it has an auto iso option
I had always used auto before but now I have the 1100D I am trying out the differentmodes but never even crossed my mind to try Tv mode - will do next time though and see what happens :)

Awww that's sweet carol and he does have that expression!!...
Your shoulder sounds uncomfortable. I hope it improves ASAP for you xx

Sorry if im giving bad advice, not up on what Canon can do. Shooting something like this with my nikon, I would select the shutter speed, set a maximum iso and let the camera choose the aperture and iso up to the maximum.

Thanks T :) doesnt look too happy about being outside in this weather

Its just like a dead arm but from shoulder and neck down to my fingers :( keep forgetting that I cant do somethings and then when I do them I get the pain and end up making some silly 'ouch' sound

Dont worry Phil ..... all advice is good advice to me :)

That's wonderful Carol for me the rain makes it, hope your feeling better soon  oh and if you want to have some night time light painting fun the date has now been set for the next night time extravaganza  I'm sure we have others coming from blackpool too so maybe a car share option
