Oh yes, wedding ring and coffin nails, or whatever the message, it really works, says Elements. I think I prefer the unedited but it is larger making for more detail.
Thanks for the storyline idea David - they say each image should tell a story. Maybe mine is about a couple (wedding band & earrings) who have held together (charcoal) having survived a lifetime of troubles(nails). How about that ha ha?

I also prefer the detail in the original, the colour cast has gone in the second but you have lost the brightness in the nails? Very creative, sudo abstract composition works well. (y)
Thank you Brian.

Hi Carl ...excellent creative composition there ...fabulous detail in the first one on Flickr ...the second one ...I like the whiter background but there's no close up link. Super shots on your Flickr by the way :)
Thanks Susie. Must admit I thought nails were just plain bits of metal - these seem to have quite some detail etched into them.

Thanks anyway Stan. Compositions, particularly the abstract, are highly subjective - thankfully at least the photography is OK.

Nice idea for the theme with a lot of different elements but not sure about the composition and layout of the image. Nevertheless, a nice colour and well lit shot.

Edit work a little better. Nice focus, well composed and nice colour in the copper. Very festive :) Cheers.
Thanks Andy. Shame there's not a market for hardware-themed Christmas cards - I could be in there ha ha.

Week 44 - Seasonal

Autumn is the season for falling leaves and vivid shades of reads & yellows. I took this shot a couple of days ago so slightly ahead of the theme being announced - must have stepped in something unpleasant to have brought such luck !

That's quick, it's only just after lunchtime on Friday and I'm still at work! You just won the fastest submission of the year.
Ha ha ... bone idleness does have it's rewards. I'm planning on a spot of bribery & corruption next so maybe posting next week's theme around this time tomorrow!

Plain brown envelope, stuffed with fivers to the usual address Carl

Hi Carl ....I spotted that one on your Flickr link ....super shot, I love the warm colours in the leaf and the detail in the reflection, is it glass with black card under it, it works really well whatever it is, it's nipped a bit tight bottom right but that could just be my preference for lots of space.
But you did take it before the topic so not sure it counts :D

Hi Susie. Very appropriately, a poor man's set-up - a mirror upon which the leaf sits with a black card behind and with a window providing natural lighting off to the right plus a bit of pp to darken the black. It is a bit of a cheat but more akin to a plain brown wrapper exchange with @Cobra than to the use of banned substances ... although I accept that the quality of the cropping may suggest otherwise :wacky:.

Hi Carl, did you not post this on Wednesday :naughty:

anyway fits the theme but it lacks DoF and I feel it needs a little more space around it, nice colour though

You're right Allan, I posted it on the General feedback forum on Wednesday. A bit of a cheat submission - I shall have to re-post for this theme :sulk:

theres no need to repost it fits the theme take no notice of my inane comments :)

Cheating, you ........ Love this shot and fits the theme perfectly you cheater you
I know - hanging my head in shame as we speak. Perhaps I should call this shot "Lance Armstrong" ... seeing how it's a leaf out of his book ha ha.

Archive shots aren't cheating (though 2 days is stretching archive ;) )
I quite like the close crop and the sharpness of the in-focus part of the leaf. I'm going to disagree with Allan, I don't think a great D0F would improve the image, it works as it is for me.

Hi Carl :)

Sorry, looks like I have missed a few... so quick catch up

Envy - Not sure if you created this or just found it for the theme, either way I love the detail in this, the texture of the sterling board really adds something to this graphic, really nicely done, whoever did it

Inverse - Having seen what you started with I really like what you have done, very nice colours and a great idea, certainly works theme wise, and looking a bit alien to me :)

Shimmer - I'm preferring the second one for this, although the backdrop cloth is a good background and does add an additional shimmer :)

Elements - Although they are not linked, I really like how you have brought the elements together, nicely set up, and with the edit added the exposure and lighting handled really well, again cracking detail throughout the image :)

Seasonal - Although not shot for the theme, certainly one of my favorites so far this week, lovely colours, really liking the reflection picking up the underneath of the leaf, and although the DoF is very narrow and quite a dark image I feel it works very well indeed

Love the colours and the reflection is super, but for me, simple images need to be as close to perfect as possible as anything that is not spot on really stands out. This is pretty close but I think it needs more breathing space to balance the image.

Thank you Tim - my card has been marked; detention and 100 lines. Went out on Sunday in search of another Seasonal - will post shortly.

Thank you DK. Envy was the product of a muddled, free-wheeling, mind. What made me link those three particular elements together is a mystery even to me but somehow they just knitted together quite well at the time. Ooops must dash - strange men in white coats approaching!

Thanks Brian. It's a fair comment - I understand exactly what you mean.

Week 44 - Seasonal (Archive re-placement)

This image was taken along the route of the Vintage London-Brighton Car Rally on a peasouper of a morning yesterday (Sunday). Seasonal weather combined with an annual event around this time of year. (Too many distracting elements but I was happy capturing movement, the art of which has until now eluded my best efforts).

Super, I see you were confronted with a rubbish background but I think you have done well to pan and render it as a blur. It really makes the car stand out doesn't it.

Thinking about it more it is lovely to see the old car amongst the modern road furniture. Kind of like 2 fingers up to the modern world. :naughty:

The B&W really suits - I'm struggling to satisfy myself with my B&W images recently so I'm a bit jealous of this. (y)

Good Shot Carl. As Brian say's, it's good to have panned and blurred the background. I guess the (can't see a badge, not even going to attempt to guess) wasn't moving all that quickly, hence the background is still pretty clear. Smaller apperture and a longer shutter speed might have helped (but then I expect you'll have had too much motion blur).

Very nice Carl, nothing to add (y)

Thanks guys. I took this hand held with shutter speed set at 1/40th which returned an aperture of f10. I have just noticed however that the ISO somehow was set @ 200 which if reduced to 100 may have enabled the aperture to be opened a bit more but not enough to make a significant difference. I don't really know what the answer is - is this a case for a graduated filter that I hear people talking about? Your advice please.

To be honest, you'll not get the shutter speed much further down without bluring the subject. The answer is a faster subject ;)
Hi Tim. Would darkening the image using a filter of some sort enable me to open the aperture more without changing the shutter speed and by that means achieve a more blurred bg? What do you think?

That's beautifully captured. Sharp and spot-on focus on the main subject and slightly burred background to show the slow movement. Quite like the distraction bg contradicting the old and the modern.
Thanks Stan. That's a good point - if I did manage to blur the bg more, that would give a false impression of greater speed than these machines are capable of. Hmmm.

I don't think that opening the aperture to reduce the DoF is really going to do it.
What you're aiming for witha pan is something like this:
IMG_2404_small.jpg
which was 1/40th sec (same as yours) and f1/29. (This shot isn't great but it shows how panning will remove the background).
Dropping below 1/focal length makes it v hard to get the shot. The longer you have the shutter open, the harder it gets to keep the subject sharp.

Ah! OK thanks for the advice Tim.

Hi Carl ...I like this one ...B&W the perfect choice and a smashing original subject for the theme ...what a great car, it must be such good fun to drive one....even if it is a bit chilly ...really nicely done
Thanks Susie - they did look a bit cold but seemed to be enjoying the day.

Seasonal leaf .... nice light & reflection.

Seasonal car ... nicely framed and panned ... great detail.

Thanks David. The veteran car run is always an enjoyable event even though even though the timing of it in November inevitably makes it a poor weather outing, this year it was the fog.

I like that Carl., I like the pattens in the glass that the water (?) is forming as well
