Just wondering if there's any kind of daily/weekly/monthly procedure for care and maintenance of my equipment that I should be carrying out?

At present, I own nothing in the way of cloths, blowers, etc.

Any specials do's or don'ts?

The reason I ask, is that I seem to have some dust between the front of my lens and the UV filter. Don't ask... probably been there since I screwed it on! Is it imperative that it's blown off with a puffer thingy, or can I use a microfibre? What about using the bottom of my t-shirt or a tea towel?

:)

Hi m8, i wouldn't use your tshirt or t-towel, unscrew your lens filter and use a blower 1st and then use a microfibre cloth and should be fine, always use a blower 1st before using microfibre cloth as any dirt/dust can scratch the lens if you rub with cloth without blowing dirt/dust away 1st, no need imo to do regular cleaning unless it needs to, when changing lenses always turn body upside down to remove and replace

Try buying special lens cleaning cloths or a lens pen,

specially desgined for the job so you shouldn't have any problems

It's not a great idea to use your t-shirt to clean the front of a lens. I do it routinely and have done for ever and ever but I know it's not big or clever. Sooner or later I'll rub a grain of sand or some grit over the front element and hasta la vista lens.

The way I look at it, if I take all the time I've saved over the years by not going to the bag for a microfibre cloth, I'm far more than a lens up on the deal.

Makes far more sense to get into good habits though. ;)

For front elements, blower followed by a brush then a wipe with a microfibre cloth if it needs it. For the body and lens, a quick brush with a 1" softish decorator's brush (kept clean for the purpose!). For the sensors, a blower (Kenro Hurricane) and if it's REALLY grubby, a LensPen SensorClean.
