Card Reader?

I've always used fairly cheap card readers, but as files are getting bigger and my current reader just died, it's time to go USB3. (I'll have to buy an expansion card too.

Any recommendations? I appear to be fairly clueless, as I've just bought whatever was available in the past.

Thanks

Phil

I have an SD reader on the laptop, but I've been looking at CF back up cards - that is a nice price, and looks tidy. I might bite here too.

:plusone: for the Lexar card reader

Also used and very happy with one of the Sandisk readers

I went for a 'multi card and USB' internal card reader, similar to this http://www.shop-fun.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=24335&currency=GBP when I updated the mobo on the computer and it's fantastic. Much faster than any of the external card readers I've had in the past and different cards can be used at the same time.

The Lexar one as recommended above seems to be the best of the external readers though and, obviously, easily portable for when you're on the go.

I recently bought a new laptop with an SD card reader built in which is faster than a USB2 card reader, for the few times I'm likely to need it I've got a USB2 external card reader in the laptop bag but it's unused so far so no idea how fast it's going to be. 99%+ of my photos will go straight onto my desktop and then put on disc or USB drive from there.

I got a Lexar USB3.0 reader, but Windows 7 could not see it. Got a Kingston USB3.0 multi card reader. Works a treat.

I occasionally use a laptop so it'll have to be external.

Spent a bit on the Sandisk one a few months ago - it has since been recycled - can't believe how unreliable these devices are -will try the Lexar based on recommendations

I don't see much point in going with USB3, the bottle neck is the memory card, USB2 read/writes at 480mb/s. The fastest SD cards are what 90-100mb/s??

Any sense of one being faster than another is largely fictional.

I use a 3.5inch Akasa AK-ICR-07 internal card reader and other than that (for my laptops and tablet) I use cheap Ebay SD card readers which set me back about £2 each.

So cheap I now have three of them, one at work, one at home and one in my camera bag, the one at work has been going strong for 2 years.

If you has a D800 the file sizes are rather on the large size, but having USB3 reader and a computer that has USB3 ports you would know the advantages. Oh and the D800 has a USB3 port as well

I have the Lexar one, bought about 12months ago, cost ~£20, not had any issues with it, except that sometimes if I leave it plugged in, the next time I come to use it I have to unplug and plug it back in to get get it to work.

Too right you would. Night and day difference.

+ one for the Lexar!

This thing reads my cheap Kingston 266x cards with 90 MB/s... :D

My Lexar cf/SD card reader arrived today. Just offloaded a bunch offile from my also new CF card - wow! Lightening quick towards my usual method, sticking an SD card into the reader built into the laptop/usb2.

I see the rpice on amazon has even dropped again since I bought mine, I got it for £19, it's dropped to £15 now, I might grab another as a back up!
