Card been cloned - twice.

It sometimes makes you wonder if there are people working in stores who have 'connections' with people who are working in the card company call centres?

Skimmers in petrol stations seem to be common. A friend had their card cloned that way a few years ago. There was a big stink about it as it was quite a few different petrol stations that had the issue.

I never use ATMs as they're often compromised.

I am wary of using ATMs too. I try to use the ATMs inside my local bank branch when I need cash. Pre-pandemic we used to get cashback at the checkout at our local Sainsbury store

I heard stories a few years back about pay-at-the-pump systems using low security Wi-Fi to send the card data over to the till for verification, so folks were parking nearby with a lappy running a packet sniffer, and harvesting the card details without having to go anywhere near CCTV monitored pumps.

Yikes. That is such a dumb thing for any developer to implement. I'd imagine the payment processors had a fit when it was discovered.

I don't remember the last time I use my card to pay for things. It's just tap tap with my phone/watch.

Sigh, this is awful.

I used to work retail, and we had MANY customers who complained over this development, with cards being cloned, skimmed, and whatnot.

In some (most) countries you're entitled to "refund" by your bank of you've been a true victim.
