Hi can anyone recommend me a very sturdy reliable light tripod for a budget of 250? I already have a tripod head from manfrotto.

Needs to hold a 5d3 and a 70-200 f2.8 mk2

Light tripods are by their very nature not sturdy lol

Giottos Vitruvian VGN8255 are really good. Lightweight and relatively stable, but does not expand to higher than 5 foot 8

I have just got the Giottos 8361b, only had it out to play once, but after putting it up in the house and getting a feel for it, have to say it's money well spent.

You may not find many reviews, i went off the Giottos 9361b reviews (same model but alloy or whatever they use), it came out the top in the reviews both online and magazines.

It goes nice and high as well and has quite a decent max weight.

The one I bought was the 3 legged version.

I thought all tripods had 3 legs? Clue is in the name... ;)

Seriously I know what you meant footman...it was the 3 section version!

Sorry couldn't resist it...:bonk:

If you have a Manfrotto head jm and are happy with the quality then if it were me I would also go for Manfrotto legs...but then again I'm just that type of guy! :D

There is an offer on at the moment at places like Park Cameras (and other dealers like Morris Photo etc.) where you can buy the 190CXPRO3 which should be ideal for under £200?

5D3 & 70-200 MKII @ 950g & 1490g = @ half its rated load capacity of 5kg?

http://www.parkcameras.com/c/81/Carbon-and-Basalt-Tripods.html?fbrand=29&Page=1

Considering its a quid cheaper than the 190CX3 (next model down in the range minus Q90 centre column, carbon fibre centre column & bubble level) it sounds like a bargain!

I am in the process of upgrading all of my supports to carbon fibre. I have the aluminium 055XPROB and am considering replacing it with the carbon version 055CXPRO3...might even get the smaller/lighter 190CXPRO3 myself?

It might pay to be a little patient on Manfrotto products as traditionally their Christmas offers tend to include free heads of one type or another and have just started to filter through to their dealer network.

Example; Manfrotto 694 carbon fibre monopod is currently available with free 234RC head until January 2013 although I haven't seen it on their own website yet?

My guess is there will be more to come and you usually start to see them appearing in dealers October/November.

Hope that helps?

Kind regards,

I got the 9361B version. It's a beast, pretty heavy but very solid. I'm a bit sorry i didn't go for the lighter one, didn't do enough research really. The one I got, is a bit heavy for trekking, it's also very big even folded down. I bought the bag for it [they really should come with the tripods!] and that makes it a hell of a lot easier to cart around. But it's another £25 to spend.

I agree, its not the lightest, but if you want one that is sturdy and solid, its the price you pay. I would have gone with the 9361b after seeing it in the flesh, I was lucky though as the carbon version came up on ebay.

OP: will it just be used indoors or will you be outside with it also.

I bought a used but mint Gitzo 1542T carbon tripod from Ffordes, which I use with a Redsnapper RSH-61 ballhead . It's @ half the weight of my Redsnapper RS-283 & RSH-12 combo, and the difference is that instead of only carrying a tripod if I know for sure I'll be using it, I carry one on the off chance I might need it. The light weight and compactness mean that it fits nicely under the flap of my ThinkTank Retro10. The combo takes a 1D MkIII/gripped 7D with a 70-200 II no bother.

Well of course it will be at Jessops. As I said, I bought mine used at a good price. Buy cheap, buy twice. Sorry to have wasted your time.

Even in amazon it is still 400ish. Jessops ain't that expensive compared to the Web mate
