Was driving home last night and the car(2003 ford focus tddi 184000 miles) lost power and stalled, after a few seconds I got it started again. Then the oil light came on and temp gauge went to max. Turned off and coasted to a stop.

On opening the hood left side of engine around the coolant tank plastered in oil, engine did not appear to be overly hot (no steam).Got lift home and getting car collected tomorrow.

Car was regularly serviced....

Any one got any ideas as to what might have happened.

seals gone on your turbo id say was there a lot of smoke out the back?

Head gasket?

Hi Rab never noticed as it was pretty dark when it happened but i would rather have that than the head gasket being gone ....

i dont want to upset you but the head gasket could be gone to if the turbo seal has gone, fingers crossed its ok for you i have seen a turbo go and kill a engine before when they go sometimes u get a chugging and then a burst/surge of power then the engine will flood with fuel resulting in the head g going and poss the piston rings etc,i have seen a engine go bang when a fuel pump went and it raced and went into self destruct the engine wouldn't turn off/stop the fastest way to stop that is stall the engine in gear anyways fingers crossed its all ok for you bud

Nearly 200K in just ten years?! Have you actually walked anywhere? :D

But being serious, that doesn't sound too clever I'm afraid.

That's nothing got 87k on a 2.5 year old car and that is with 3 months of no driving at all

To the op. I would guess at turbo or head gasket

surprised its a tddi on a 2003 car
would have thought a tdci

Car is a German import never gave any bother before..but i will get a good look at it tomorrow but don't hold out much hope ...:'(

As far as the mileage living in Northern Ireland where nothing is handy and being a one car family doesn't help ,previous car was a 1996 1.8D fiesta which had 196k on it in 7 years never gave any bother either until a VW polo pulled out of a side road :bang:

Diesel engines easily do 200k these days, virtually bomb proof! I would say the turbo seals had gone, if a head gasket goes it's usually gone internally - very hard to shoot out muck on one side of the engine. At least you got a good bit of mileage out of her though!

Turned out to be the oil cooler .....

Back on the road again :)

Mate said it had been weeping for a while and then it just failed I take it he meant a seal or diaphragm but I'm not sure.
